But...but...I thought cell phones on airplanes will screw up the plane and lead to it crashing. < /sarc>

LOL. I was very tempted recently in an airport restaurant. Some sales idot was yakking so loudly on his cell that all of us for many tables away could hear him. Then he gave his cell number to whomever was on the other end of the connection -- and all the rest of us as well. It was tempting to go to a nearby pay phone and call him... but I didn't.

I dont think anyone ever claimed cell phoneswould make a plane crash, it's that they cause noise over the pilot's radio.

I just can't wait to be in a plane with a self-important, blue tooth ear-thing wearing, idiot who wants everyone in the cabin to hear his conversation...

"Did you get my e-mail on the Johnson account? What? I said, 'DID YOU GET MY E-MAIL ON THE JOHNSON ACCOUNT'!?!?"

The screaming kid in the row behind me on my flight home from Philadelphia yesterday was bad enough.

So finding a way to charge the public for using a cell phone on a plane (which is the plan) will stop the noise on the pilot's radio?

Remember when you can get on an airplane, sit quietly, smoke a cigarette, have a COLD adult beverage, watch a movie, and sometimes eat a halfway decent meal?

But yes, this is much better today.

As a student pilot, I can tell you that yes, cell phones cause chirping in the pilot's headset. Ever leave your cell phone near your computer speaker as a call is coming in? It makes the same noise, only about 20 times louder.

False, see http://www.mobile-review.com/articles/2002/plane-en.shtml

Although very very rare, cell phones can possibly affect other equipment than the pilot's radio. I wouldnt be afraid af anyone using them, but there is slightly more to fear than the pilot's radio, especially now that everything nowadays is fly-by-wire or is heading that way.

Don't need a cellphone....just use my softclient VoIP phone in my notebook PC with a headset and call just as I do from any hotspot today....plus people can call me back...

Actually, they can. Phones using the analogue and 800 MHz digital bands can interfere with DME and ILS receivers. Interference with ILS *shouldn't* cause a crash but can cause enough problems on the approach that the crew would have to go around.
