This winter, FEMA put up over 300 Hurricane Katrina evacuees in New York City hotels. Almost all of them have gone back to their lives, their jobs. But not Theon Johnson. Hes currently sprawled out watching Halloween 5 on one of the two full-size beds in his room at the JFK Airport Holiday Inn. He is one of four evacuees still living in a hotel in the city.

Well, I guess the idea of hired thugs barging in and kicking his ass into the street is sounding a whole lot better...

If memory serves, Holiday Inn would get charged with illegal eviction if it did any of those things. Squatters have better rights than those of us paying property taxes.
I am not a lawyer, nor do I play one on TV, but I would think a hotel/motel operates under different rules then an apartment. Maybe New York is different, but if so, what prevents anyone from moving checking into a hotel, and never paying or leave?

It probably is different for hotels/motels/inns, but even then, some of them may keep themselves at risk. I think it may depend on how they are processed in--guests staying less than x number of days being considered transient, guests staying for an extended period being considered resident. The residents, I'm betting, are the ones that lead to trouble.

Well, I guess the idea of hired thugs barging in and kicking his ass into the street is sounding a whole lot better... Here's a pleasant update on my situation: Lansing Police decided not to wait for the squatters next door to be evicted. They raided the place last night. Four of the six present were arrested. They face charges ranging from felony posession (with intent) of narcotics to illegal posession of firearms. As of this evening, none of the good citizens apprehended in the raid have made bail.
