A record number of voters -- unable to distinguish between the main candidates, turned off by negative ads and just plain burned out on elections -- remain unable to choose between Controller Steve Westly and Treasurer Phil Angelides with just four days to go before Tuesday's Democratic primary for governor.
Despite a vigorous campaign fueled by more than $60 million in spending, a Field Poll released today shows that nearly a third of likely voters are still on the fence -- an unprecedented number so close to the election.
The poll also shows Westly and Angelides in a dead heat, meaning both sides have much at stake in the coming days as they try to figure out what undecided voters are still searching for.
"It's been a campaign without energy," said San Francisco resident Doug Wyllie. "Other things have captured my attention -- world events, for instance. This hasn't.
"And I see them as very similar in a lot of ways, and, to me, it's most important which of them is more electable and likely to beat (Gov. Arnold) Schwarzenegger in the fall."
The poll, conducted during the nine-day period ending May 31, found Westly with 35 percent and Angelides with 34 percent; 5 percent said they were voting for someone else, and 26 percent were undecided.
With a margin of error of plus or minus 4.5 percentage points, the race is a statistical tie.
The results are similar to polls released in the last week from the Los Angeles Times and the Public Policy Institute of California.
But Mark DiCamillo, poll director for Field, said the number of undecided voters found in his survey was the most ever measured so close to a primary election day.

They could come here and get lessons.
I think the dems would have better luck if they stopped concentrating on "who can beat the incumbent" (read: Kerry) and concentrate on what they can offer the voters. That is, concentrate on the state's PROBLEMS and their SOLUTIONS. Oh, wait. . . they don't have any solutions; they're dems!
Westley and Angelides are pieces of work....the dems definitely have alot to choose from. rofl
Vote for Arnold.
He's a Democrat.
lol but the sad thing is, you are right! Nope Arnold didn't get my vote last time and won't get it this time.
