One man was shot, another arrested - both of Pakistani orign - in the pre-planned, intelligence-led British police anti-terror raid in Forest Gate, East London early Friday. The police officers were armed and wore protective clothes. The area has a large Muslim immigrant population, early Friday. Security and health department personnel took part in the raid. The man shot is not in danger.
London police say the raid was not directly linked to last year's July 7 attacks on London transport.
UK security agencies estimate that the number of militants affiliated to al Qaeda at large in UK has quadrupled in a year from an estimated 250 to at least one thousand now.

LONDON
Police shot a man during a raid in east London early Friday and later arrested him on suspicion of terrorism.
Neighbors said police quietly swooped down on a racially mixed neighborhood before dawn and surrounded the home of a man, his wife and their four teenage children. They described seeing a man wearing a bloodstained T-shirt being carried out of the house.
Metropolitan Police said the wounded man is suspected of instigating, preparing, and committing terrorist acts. Another man was arrested in the raid but police did not say on what grounds.
The terror suspect was taken to a hospital, but his injuries were not life-threatening, police said. Two other people in the house during the raid were treated at the hospital and released. It was not clear what they were treated for.
"An examination of the officers' firearms confirms that a single shot was discharged in circumstances which are currently under investigation," said Deborah Glass of the Independent Police Complaints Commission. She declined to say whether the shooting victim had been armed.
Dimple Hirani, 21, who lives nearby, said she saw "loads of police and loads of vans." The police had special uniforms, gloves and equipment, she said.
Police said raid came after consultations with biochemical experts.
Shopkeeper Salim Mala, 42, said the streets were sealed off when he arrived for work and plain-clothes police and officers wearing protective suits were combing the area.
He described the residents as a mixture of Bengalis, Pakistanis, eastern Europeans and Britons.

FOX has had correspondents from SKY news on. Mention of a chemical weapon of some sort. Although it does not look like they evacuated the neighborhood. And they have now erested some sort of tent in front of the building I would assume so that news cameras cannot see what they are bringing out. Does not look like anything urgent which means it if were a chemical device they had probably not mixed them into anything deadly at this point.
They also said it was not connected to the subway bombings and the intellegience for this came from Pakistan.
Supoosidly the whole chemical/biological/radiological angle to the story is coming from that stuff.
When they went in the 1st time, they were wearing protective suits and gloves, and afterwards they put up a field tent, and brought in biological experts.
So its either some kind of home made WMD lab, or at least looks enough like one for them to be concerned.
I didn't even notice this was breaking... I would have snazzed up the title and stuff if I knew it was still going on.
At the time it was just a debka article I read and wanted to check out.... ahhh well.
I love the quote near the end where the guy complains it ain't right to shoot him in front of his mum like that, no problem with the chemical weapons though...these people are sick.
