Couric hopes to end "pretentious era" in news

LAS VEGAS (Hollywood Reporter) - Katie Couric hopes to bring a "humanistic, more accessible" approach to her job when she takes over as anchor and managing editor at "CBS Evening News" in September, she said Thursday.

Addressing the annual convention of CBS affiliates, Couric predicted that the "pretentious era" of the evening-news anchor is going to be a thing of the past.

"The audience is more sophisticated than we give them credit for -- they don't want a mechanical Ted Baxter," said Couric, whose last day as co-anchor of NBC's "Today" was Wednesday. "I'm a serious, caring, compassionate person. I hope that comes out. ... People want a multidimensional (news anchor) and not someone they can put in a box."

"The audience is more sophisticated than we give them credit for -- they don't want a mechanical Ted Baxter,"

Let's see, the Ted Baxter character was a creation of the old Mary Tyler Moore show, which brought us among other things:

1) The odious, hateful secular pig Ed Asner.

2) At least one episode lionizing the leftist anti-American, anti-military liar Walter Cronkite.

Very apropos choice perkette Couric...

We will just have to wait and see how she does. I probably won't watch, but I will find out just how much she is going to change the corrupt news organization from FREEPERS. If she does indeed try to improve than I will give her kudos, but until then...I am not buying it.

Truth be known...I didn't even read the entire article before posting the thread.

I stopped at "I'm a serious, caring, compassionate person. I hope that comes out. ... People want a multidimensional (news anchor) and not someone they can put in a box."

Just remember this moron stated she HOPED Saddam escaped with his life to Syria.

Thats all you need to know about Katie Couric.

Exactly: Katie's homily sounded for all the world like "now I'm gonna show the nice, sweet, nurturing, loving way a girl does the news."

That's okay, but ironic that it goes completely against her otherwise Feminazi worldview.

Men = pretentious. Women =/ pretentious. According to Katie.

Katie Couric will be capable of doing much less damage to the nation as a CBS newsreader. Nobody watches that crap anymore. I predict that she will absolutely crash at her new position - - a complete flop.

The huge audience of women who watched Couric in the morning as they were getting ready for work or sending the kids off to school is not around at 6:00. That's the time when the men come home from work and many women are still in charge of dinner whether they work or not. Plus, the kids are home and they are watching TV.

There are very few casual news watchers anymore - - serious news junkies amd people like us political junkies here at FR get our news from the internet or from a 24-hour cable news channel. The six-o'clock network news program is a dying institution, and it is dying fast. Couric is just in time to help usher it out for good, at least at CBS.

(Tin-foil hat alert: It has crossed my mind that NBC worked a backroom deal with CBS to "Lunden" the Perky One out of the 'Today' show. Getting CBS to offer her the anchor job was about the only way NBC could get rid of her without a public relations problem. Possibly, NBC is sharing her current salary load. Ratings will tell the tale, and if they are as terrible as I suspect they will be, then CBS will "Chung" her out of town and everybody can wash their hands of Katie Couric. /Tin-foil hat alert)

Anyone who ever had the misfortune of seeing Katie trying to report on the elections---sitting there with Tom Brokaw trying his best to coach her---just knows if she DOES depart from teleprompter world, she'll crash and burn even faster. She had zero ability to contemporaneously comment upon and analyze anything political.

If we see Katie yachting with Cronkite off of Martha's Vineyard this summer,we'll know what to expect in terms of accuracy.

ACCURACY,Katie...that's all we want from you.And we won't be holding our breath waiting to see it.

Isn't that special, she's going to "end an era". Will the times prior to her arrival be known as BK and the times after AK?

Boy, oh, boy, she's really got a case of the dizzies, doesn't she?

First of all, the evening news anchors she so categorically disses (delicious, I admit, but imagine how these comments are being taken in TV World!) mostly READ the "news." They weren't doing an interview format. (Though I admit it's been decades since I watched the "evening news.")

But the main thing here is how breathtaking it is that this shrew thinks she's going to revolutionize a dying beast. Had she approached this with some sense of humility, she might have won a few brownie points for herself.

er....uh....actually, Katie....we would LOVE to put you in a box.......don't worry, we would add tiny little air-holes.....

We could give Katie an enema and, afterwards, fit her into a matchbox.

I'm not so sure about your charge that she'll just "read" the news.

Dan Blather surely decided what reached the airwaves...and the recent article we read about Brit Hume suggested that he didn't suffer fools in the newsroom graciously.

Ted Baxters?!?!

She is a fool. At best, she has a shot -- just a SHOT -- at earning herself more than a tryout.

I'd think that she could use some friends in the passing generation. I can just imagine how friendly Bob Schieffer, e.g., is going to be feeling toward her after these arrogant remarks.
