"The transformation of Zakaria Amara"

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "MISSISSAUGA More than anything, Zakaria Amara wanted to serve God. But it was never easy, especially not while living in Canada.
During the summer of 2004, the then-18-year-old felt disgusted by women who were immodestly dressed. For the same reason, he couldn't watch television. He and his wife Nada Farooq stopped going to movies. One of his devout friends in England sent him a desperate e-mail asking for help in beating an addiction to pornography.
But the forces tugging at Mr. Amara -- who now stands accused of being one of two leaders in a terrorist plot -- in the years leading up to his arrest this month extended well beyond those annoyances."

30 Chinese House Church Leaders and Christians Arrested in Sichuan Province; 14 Received Criminal Detention after Brutal Abuse
By Dan Wooding
Founder of ASSIST Ministries
MIDLAND, TX (ANS) -- The China Aid Association (CAA) based in Midland, Texas, has sent out a news release saying that it has learned that from May 27th to 28th, 2006, thirty House Church leaders from Langzhong City, Sichuan Province were arrested and forced to pay fines.
Fourteen received criminal detention after they were brutally abused, said the news release. Eyewitnesses and family members of the victims reported to CAA that the raid and arrests happened from 11 AM on May 27th until 9 AM on 28th as this group was attending a church coworkers fellowship meeting.
After the meeting, fifteen members of the Public Security Bureau in 6 police vehicles raided the meeting. Some of the arrested were released on the 28th. The morning of the 29th, fourteen received criminal detention notices. They are Pastors LI Ming, WANG Yuan, LI Jinbo, LI Chengxi, SHI Zhihe, GOU Yongcai, JIN Jiyun, Sister WANG Shuhua, GOU Qingju, KE Xiufang, SUN Changfen, HU Yongju, ZHANG Shulan and LIAO Zhoulan.
Among the fourteen, Pastors LI Ming, WANG Yuan, LI Jinbo and JIN Jiyun are major leaders of the Chinese House Church Alliance. The Chinese House Church Alliance was established in 2004 and is made up of approximately three hundred thousand members from various house church movements scattered across twenty-one provinces.
According to the CAA release, Eyewitnesses said that during both the arrests and interrogations, the Christians were abused inhumanely by constant heavy beatings. Pastor LI Ming, who is one of the seven top national leaders of the House Church Alliance, was observed to have been beaten and kicked by 6 policemen about his head and abdomen during his arrest.
CAA says that it has also learned that in recent weeks a number of house churches from Beijing, Shangdong and Guangdong were forced to close by the local authorities.
These illegal arrests and detentions are a very disturbing indication of the deteriorating condition of religious freedom in China, said Bob Fu of CAA. We call upon the international community to demand that the Chinese government honor their international obligations to respect and protect the religious freedoms of the Chinese citizens. CAA called for the immediate release of these innocent Christian leaders. Letters of protest and concern can be sent to the Chinese Embassy.

Remarks by Ambassador Kristie A. Kenney
Presentation of Rewards for Justice Payments to Two Filipino Citizens
May 31, 2006
U.S. Embassy, Manila
Good morning and welcome to all of you. We are here today for a very special and important occasion. The Philippines, as I have seen in my travels around this country during my time here, is a country of peace. It is a country whose people want peace and prosperity.
There are, regrettably, those who would threaten that peace; those who would destroy lives, would destroy dreams, and would destroy homes. I was in Washington in September of 2001 and I watched an airplane crash into the Pentagon. In April of 2006, I stood in front of a marketplace in Jolo and I saw the same sort of destruction and damage. Today we can see the Super Ferry at harbor outside our Embassy windows and we are reminded again of people who tried to destroy lives and dreams. The one message we must take away from all of these events is that such violence cannot stand. Our citizens and our children deserve to live lives of peace and prosperity. I want to assure all of you here in the Philippines, the United States stands absolutely ready to be your partner in peace and prosperity.
We use our programs like the Rewards for Justice and training exercises with the police and military to make sure that security forces here can combat terrorists. We also work to build prosperity in those same areas through our development assistance programs.
Today we are gathered to honor two very brave patriots -- ordinary Filipino citizens who came forward with actions and information that led to the arrest of a vicious terrorist. They deserve the reward they get today. They deserve our thanks and our gratitude. They are ordinary people, living ordinary lives, who had the bravery and courage to stand up and say that terrorists will never be accepted. I see that sentiment everywhere in this country.
Filipinos are an extraordinary nation of peace and I want to assure you we stand ready to be your partner, shoulder to shoulder, and we stand ready to continue to reward the brave and courageous people who risk their to help apprehend terrorists.
Thank you very much to all of you for coming today. This is an event that means a great deal to all of us. Thank you.

Chicago man had ties to Miami-based alleged terrorist group
LAURA WIDES-MUNOZ
Associated Press
MIAMI - A Chicago man arrested last month and charged with illegal possession of a weapon has been identified by federal prosecutors as a former member of an alleged group of aspiring terrorists based in Miami.
In court documents filed Thursday, prosecutors identified the man as Charles Stewart or "Sultan Khan Bey," and said he apparently belonged to an organization called the Moorish National Republic, for which he was trying to recruit members. Stewart has not been charged in the terrorism case.
The group in Miami was arrested June 22. Six men are accused of seeking to support what they thought was an al-Qaida operative's effort to bomb FBI buildings in Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, New York and Washington. A seventh man, was arrested and charged in Atlanta.
In fact, their only al-Qaida contact was an individual cooperating with the FBI.
The group's alleged leader Narseal Batiste met with Stewart in April in Miami where the two discussed recruiting new members and the need for "a revolution to help the people," according to the documents.
Stewart allegedly told Batiste they were "here to rid the Earth of filth..."
But the group allegedly splintered in mid-April after Stewart confronted Batiste over what he feared was law enforcement surveillance of the group's operations, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Richard Getchell in Atlanta.
In early May, Stewart allegedly shot a gun at a person inside a Miami store the group frequented. He was arrested May 5 and charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm. It was unclear from the documents whether anyone was injured or whether the arrest was connected to the alleged shooting.
After his arrest, Stewart allegedly told federal agents, "he had knowledge of individuals that were 'plotting' against the United States," and that "these people were starting to get serious."
Stewart, whose age was unavailable, was released on bond and assigned a federal public defender, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Miami. The public defender's office in Miami did not immediately know if one of its attorneys was representing him.
Also on Thursday, Lyglenson Lemorin, 31, the suspect arrested in Atlanta, was denied bond and ordered transferred to Miami to await trial.
...For the same reason John Kerry and Patrick Leahy are still in the U.S. Senate, and Hanoi Jane is still out walking around, I suppose. I forget... but didn't Jimmy Carter, by executive order, or some such, abolish 'treason' as a criminal offense, at least for Democrats, sometime back in the 1970s?
Thank you bitt.

Jimmy Carter did a lot of dumb things all right. It wouldn't surprise me at all that he'd write something as stupid to let Hanoi Jane off the hook though!

Tokyo: Boy sets home on fire, kills family ["Boy" is 19. The fire is premeditated murder.]

Boy sets home on fire, kills family
From: Agence France-Presse
June 29, 2006
A JAPANESE teenager angry with his family allegedly burned down his house today, killing three relatives, in the second such case in as many weeks.
The 19-year-old doused his house in northern Iwate prefecture with oil and set it ablaze in the early hours, killing his mother, sister and brother, evening newspapers said.
The teenager had family problems and told a brother before setting the fire, "I am going to burn this house and I intend to die with everyone," the Mainichi Shimbun said, citing police.
But the boy himself and another brother were clinging to life, unconscious in a hospital with serious burns. His father, who worked out of town, and his grandmother were not at home during the alleged attack.
One neighbour expressed surprise at the crime and said the boy, who lived at home after quitting the job he found after high school, "appeared to be quiet", Kyodo News reported.
The case was similar to an arson attack on June 20, when a 16-year-old in western Nara prefecture allegedly set his home ablaze, killing his stepmother and two siblings, in a row after he refused to show his father his school test scores.
Japan has frequently seen copycat crimes after cases gain wide media attention. In 2004 and 2005, Japan witnessed a rash of arson attacks on supermarket merchandise and a series of assaults carried out with dumbbells.

"Security pact hits terrorism"
Michael Harvey and Cindy Wockner

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "AUSTRALIA and Indonesia have announced plans for a joint security agreement, but both sides deny it amounts to a defence alliance or military pact.
They claim it is a co-operative plan to combat terrorism, trans-boundary crime, and illegal immigration.
"This is not a defence alliance," Foreign Affairs Minister Alexander Downer said. "There will be no secret treaty and this will not be a security alliance of the kind we have with the United States of America."
The agreement follows a visit to Indonesia this week by Prime Minister John Howard, who yesterday wound up his overseas tour."

Thousands in Egypt rally for Palestinians
Calling for jihad against Israel. Tiny Minority of Extremists Update and 1938 Alert from AP:
CAIRO, Egypt - Several thousand protesters at one of Cairo's main mosques called Friday for holy war against Israel to help the Palestinians in their conflict with the Jewish state.
The Middle East on the Muslim day of prayer saw other few protests against Israel's offensive in Gaza, except for small rallies by hundreds in Palestinian refugee camps.
More than 3,000 people packed Al-Azhar Mosque, the most prominent institution in the Sunni Arab world, for prayers and a demonstration organized by the Egyptian government's top rival, the Muslim Brotherhood.
"Rulers of Arab countries, start holy war! God is great!" men shouted, their voices ringing through the rafters of the 1,000-year-old building.
Participants said they had little hope their governments would listen.
"We have a chronic problem in the Arab world; policies don't reflect what the people want. People inside the mosque say they will die to save Palestine, but our governments don't do anything to help," said Mohammed al-Zaeem, 36, a visiting Syrian.
Hundreds of black-clad security forces in riot gear surrounded the mosque in the sweltering noontime sun but there were no arrests.
Police agreed not to arrest protesters if they remained inside the mosque, said Abdel-Galil el-Sharnoubi, a member of the Brotherhood's political bureau....
Several thousand people held pro-Palestinian protests in the northern Egyptian province of Damietta.
Clerics from Baghdad to Beirut referred to "American-Zionist terrorism" and a "war to annihilate the Palestinian people."
But Arab governments appeared eager not to enflame popular sentiment. Al-Azhar's government-appointed cleric conspicuously avoided the topic of Israeli-Palestinian fighting in his sermon.
"The U.S. supports Egypt with weapons and soldiers, so our government is paralyzed and unable to do anything," said worshipper Mahmoud Abu el-Bashir.
That's the best argument for the jizya to Egypt that I've heard in a long time. I doubt, however, that it will ultimately hold true.
