Jefferson case chills Democrats
Wednesday, May 31, 2006
By MARIE COCCO
Democrats, repeat after me. In his freezer.
This is the retort that chills the Democrats' contention that Republicans in the House have nurtured a "culture of corruption" which can only be undone by electing Democrats and booting the GOP from control over Capitol Hill.
And just think. Freezer jokes will keep their freshness only until we see the videotapes.
That is, the videotapes of Rep. William Jefferson, D-La., allegedly taking a briefcase full of bills -- about $100,000 in all -- in what the FBI believes was a plot to enrich himself by promoting business ventures in Africa. The investigators allege that most of this cash (marked bills, of course) was divided into handy tin-foil packets and stashed in Jefferson's freezer.
We will, no doubt, soon see leaked videotapes played constantly on those annoyingly repetitive cable news channels. And then, guess what?
The biggest congressional scandal in a generation -- that is, the one involving convicted Republican lobbyist Jack Abramoff, disgraced former Republican leader Tom DeLay, a still-unknown number of mostly Republican lawmakers and former Republican staffers -- will suddenly look like a Democratic scandal. Why? Because that's what will be on TV. Visuals are everything.
There is only one thing for Democrats to do now: Show that they really are different from Republicans.
They must demonstrate zero tolerance for corruption. They can't push Jefferson out of Congress -- only the voters in his New Orleans district can do that. But certainly Democrats can usher Jefferson out the door of his committee rooms.
**SNIP**
Pelosi must solve the Jefferson problem fast -- before we go to the videotape.

Not stupid but bought & paid for by the elites. Isn't that leadership virtually hand picked by GW? However stupid in the fact that they have NO clue of their constituents wishes because they are owned by the elites.
Didn't he play Fat Bastard?
Neither Jefferson nor the usual gaggle of race baitors have played the "race" card yet. Or, if they have, I haven't heard it. But, think as hard as I might, I can't figure out how they'll justify a "race" defense. It's coming, but how would they possibly get one going?
1) The money was really going to go towards reparations for American slavery
2) The money (earmarked for the poor in his district) was put in the freezer so the KKK wouldn't find it.
3) He was being set up by Whitey--and he knew it all along--and he was hiding the evidence before he went to the good reverends Jackson and Sharpton for moral and spiritual advice.
4) (fill in the blank)
Not true.
Section. 5. Each House shall be the Judge of the Elections, Returns and Qualifications of its own Members, and a Majority of each shall constitute a Quorum to do Business; but a smaller Number may adjourn from day to day, and may be authorized to compel the Attendance of absent Members, in such Manner, and under such Penalties as each House may provide.
Each House may determine the Rules of its Proceedings, punish its Members for disorderly Behaviour, and, with the Concurrence of two thirds, expel a Member
Article 1, Section 5, Constitution for the United States.
Rocks just sit there, the GOP leadership practices active stupidity.
Jefferson, if he loses his house seat, which I doubt, will probably be back in a few years as Secretary of HHS, or if he's a lawyer, Attorney General or a federal judge.
Looks like a drunk...
Really low rent stuff.
A wife and five daughters. Three of them have Harvard law degrees; the other two are still in college, and his wife's title is "Dr." (of what, I don't know).
I'd guess there's nothing much in that freezer besides cash.
I knew he had children, some who were recipients of the deals, thanks for the info on his marital status.
Actually, the reaction of Hastert, et al, keeps this on the front page - right where pubbies want it. Another W rope-a-dope???????
Amistad Research Center
Andrea G. Jefferson
President & Chair
Dr. Andrea Green Jefferson is the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at Southern University at New Orleans. Before accepting this position, she served as a member of the Southern University System Board of Supervisors and as Chair of the Baton Rouge Community College Board. She is a member of the Tulane University Presidents Council, a Director of the Urban League of Greater New Orleans, and a Director of numerous other boards. She has served on the Editorial Board of three scholarly journals and as Editor of a national professional organizations newsletter.
One odd thing I read about the videotape is that when the agent dropping off the bribe asked Jefferson about his plans for the future, Jefferson said that his plans were to conclude this deal and that after that he didn't think he would last very long. In other words he knew that he would probably be caught, so it seems that perhaps he was just trying to benefit family members.
BTW an acquaintance of mine had a relative who was involved in something similar to the mafia in Hawaii. She told me that while staying in his house she noticed stacks of money in the freezer and guns in the dryer.
Because Barry is a democrat politician and he is black in a vastly predominant black district. With the Jefferson crimes, the democraps will eventually play the race card then claim he was collecting evidence to bring on an investigation. Democrats assume that American voters are dumb as rocks ... and it appears their voters may actually be so impaired because they swallow the lies and manipulations eagerly, to continue drinking the democrap koolaid because they're so filled with hate that they cannot reason.
In certain districts, voters are dumb as rocks!
They didn't violate the Constitution and it wasn't the GOP, it was the Justice Dept that got a subpoena from a Federal Judge and legally searched his office.
No, but the GOP leadership in the House then attacked the Justice Dept. for supposedly violating the Constitution.
Right. I misread your post. Oops. Hastert is known for quitely working behind the scenes etc and strangely picks this issue to go public about. Now the story is the FBI and not Jefferson. Just brilliant (pardon the pun).
I think we are jumping on Haster a little too soon. If I was a betting man... I would say he is taking our arrows on purpose. He is trying to lighten the investigation so the Democrats can't say this is a Republican lynching.
Haster is crying foul because he HAS TO! Otherwise you know the press would be ginning this us as a Republican lockdown on anyone who disagrees with them. It has to be that simple. We were all singing Haster's praises awhile ago so don't jump so soon.
Fair logic sir and fair enough.
