United Express flight overruns runway in central Wisconsin
By Associated Press
. MOSINEE, Wis. (AP) A United Express flight that overran the runway on a landing at Central Wisconsin Airport was pulled from the mud on Wednesday.
The 44 passengers and three crew members were not injured in Tuesday afternoon's landing, said manager Tony Yaron.
Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board were investigating Wednesday and found the situation highly unusual, said Elizabeth Isham Cory, a Chicago-based spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration.
The CRJ 200 regional jet was coming from Chicago and tried to land at about 4 p.m. Tuesday on the north-south runway at the two-runway airport.
It came to rest in a grassy area about 200 yards north of the runway.
The flight, United Flight 6979, was operated for United by SkyWest Airlines out of Utah.
Larry, 47, and Bonnie Wells, 51, were on the plane from Phoenix, Ariz., to surprise their parents with a visit. Bonnie Wells said she knew something wasn't right.
``It was punching kind of brake, more jerking motion and so we started looking around going, 'What's going on, something is odd,''' she said. ``And then (we) look out the windows and it went from pavement to grass.''
The passengers clapped when the plane stopped, she said.
``Everyone then got on their phones or were text messaging saying, 'We're out in a cornfield,''' she said. ``Everyone was calm and relaxed and thought it was exciting.''
An end loader was used to get the bags off the plane. Some passengers waited two hours before receiving their luggage.
The incident's cause was not immediately known, Yaron said.
An investigation could take several weeks, Isham Cory said.
Better that then "undershooting" the runway!
Corn whizzing past the window would be a clue something was wrong.
Bush.
Any landing you walk away from is a good landing....
I am just glad there were no injuries...
I bet there was lots of "whizzing" going on..
no one hurt, flying can be dangerous at times...
FOD damage from creamed corn, mechanics will be snickering over that one...
a united express from huston had problems landing
at dulles this week too. the nose landing gear
didnt come down. just a few injuries onboard.
How heartwarming.
Can just hear the co-pilot saying to the captain:
"Gee, Doug! Wasn't that the runaway we just passed?"
Fish looking in means very wrong.
If I were a frequent flier, I'd get the tail number of that airplane for future reference!
Damn, that runway was short! But LOOK HOW DANG WIDE it is!.................
Captain, we overshot the runway!
That's correct, first officer, but did you notice how wide the SOB was??
That's what happened to my buddy who suffered fuel exhaustion and dead sticked into a field at night while giving dual instruction.
The still pursued certificate action and suspended his license for 30 days.
I think to send a message to other CFI's that running out of gas is uncool.
I was able to salvage the stall warning horn out of the wrecked 152 though.
Sometimes I'll toot on it in flight just to goof on the pilot.
United Flight 6979 now arriving at Gate 13...Gate 14...Gate 15...Gate 16.....
Gate 26..Gate 27..Gate 28.....
