BALTIMORE (AP) -- A man who police say pretended to be a station attendant and "sold" gasoline to drivers for $10 a tank was stealing the expensive commodity and pocketing the purchase money. Joseph K. Boulware, 41, of an unknown address, was arrested May 19 at a gas station in West Baltimore where, police said, he dispensed 450 gallons of gas worth about $1,300. He was charged with theft, assault and possession of crack cocaine. His bail status could not be determined. Authorities said Mr. Boulware used a magnetic key and a code that effectively places a pump on standby mode, allowing him to dispense gasoline unnoticed.

Pretty crafty for a crackhead...
Enron has a couple of openings ...
It sounds like a lot of people got a real good deal thanks to this guy.
I'm thinking ghetto scam.
How long before the punishment for possession of "magnetic keys" becomes more severe than for crack cocaine?
My dad told me stories of this back during the gas lines in the 70's. Guys would walk up to your car with a clipboard (so they would look official) and jot down your license plate number and ask how much you were buying. They would ask for the $5 or $10 up front so the lines would move more quickly.
Good scam. I like it.
My dad only feel for it 8 or 9 times before he caught on.
Then the wallet inspector came to town!
It sounds like a lot of people got a real good deal could be charge with receiving stolen goods thanks to this guy.
They would have to know the gas was stolen.
Fill ups at $10 when the price was $3 a gallon and they didn't think it was suspicious?
When the guy on the street in DC offers to sell you a Rolex for $10, you know it's either stolen or a knockoff.
If only he'd been wearing a suit and a tie, they would have called it misappropriation of funds and he would have gotten a hand slap...
"Book em Dano"...
Maybe, maybe not. It could be better PR is the gas station just dropped it. How could the customer know that there wasn't some special promotion going on? They should have been suspicious, but how would they know?
