Feinstein accuses Bush of abusing presidential power
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | May 31, 2006 | Bob Egelko

Sen. Dianne Feinstein accused President Bush of abusing his authority Tuesday by claiming the right to override hundreds of laws and by sweeping aside congressional attempts to regulate wiretapping.

"The president is usurping power from both the legislative and the judicial branches and destroying this balance that has served our country so well,'' the Democratic lawmaker said at a dinner meeting of the Queen's Bench bar association in San Francisco.

"I believe we are on our way to a most serious constitutional confrontation.''

Feinstein focused much of her criticism on Bush's use of presidential signing statements to interpret laws passed by Congress. More than 700 times since taking office in 2001, Bush has inserted statements into the Federal Register saying he was signing a law with the understanding that it could not restrict his authority to command the armed forces, conduct foreign policy, supervise the executive branch of government or exercise a variety of other constitutional powers.

The White House has repeatedly said Bush is following precedents set by other administrations in this regard and is not exceeding his authority. But although presidents since Ronald Reagan have used signing statements as instruments of executive power, Bush has issued more than all past presidents combined and has made the most forceful claims of authority to disregard congressional views.

There is one Presidential Power I would like to see the President use that he has so far avoided abusing...

To power to keep his Presidential Shoe out of her sorry, liberal Senatorial Ass.

Oh but Di-Fi is....

Statement of Senator Dianne Feinstein on Passage of the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Bill
May 25, 2006

“The Senate today approved a sweeping overhaul of the nation’s immigration laws, which strengthens border security, provides for an agriculture workers program, and a path to citizenship for millions of undocumented workers. (blah blah blah)

She just hides the stuff on her Senate Website

(I was looking for something else and found the above)

"sweeping aside congressional attempts to regulate wiretapping."

Obvious MSM lie since the President has no power to just sweep aside regulations unless it violates his authority under the Constitution.

DiFi, if you actually READ the FISA and CALEA laws passed by Congress and signed by various presidents, you'd see that it was Congress who authorized such surveillance that you misleadingly call wiretaps. In the case of both FISA and CALEA there are court findings supporting their legality.

I suspect that you know this well and are spreading lies knowing that most people who hear your voice will not actually look it up.

DiFi has to pander to her constiuents. She most likely knows all W does is legal and necessary for the WOT. It's just catering to the left, adding to the MSM anti-W piling on tactic.

She's firing the opening shot for impeachment proceedings if and when the Dems take control of congress. The whole final year of the Bush administration will be nothing but investigations, hearings and impeachment. Welcome to the Democrat majority...

From one of Feinstein's responses:

Thank you for contacting me to express your opposition to gun control. I appreciate hearing your views on this matter, however, it seems this is an issue upon which we must agree to disagree. Since I arrived in the Senate in 1992, I have been working to limit the illegitimate use of powerful firearms in this country. I have long supported reasonable gun control laws.

I, unfortunately, am one of her involuntary constituents. Ms. Feinstein would know about abuse of power given the Democratic penchant for executive orders and appointing activist judges they know will override the other branches of the government, not to mention the states, to implement the social order they want. So if Bush is exercising a strong arm tactic, there was good precedent and it was placed there under her Senatorial watch.

Ms. Feinstein couldn't get home without a Triple-A Trip Tik. Our doubt if she can discern a constitutional crisis.

Woman of the people, right? You should see her house in San Fran! Private road and private cops. Yup, another terrific case of "Do as I say, not as I do." Another Limo Lib. Who bothers to pay attention to these hand-wringing whiners?
