Floridians don't object to a fair insurance price. The problem is, the state insurance company (the only one writing in my area in FL) is so badly run we don't trust it to use a tax correctly.

We already have special hurricane deductables. (You need several thousand dollars of damage to even file a claim). We already pay some of the highest insurance in the nation. (I pay $3000 a year on a $160000 home, and I don't live near the beach or in a flood area). And we haven't had a hurricane. So why are my premiums going up each year by over 100%?

We sense somethings rotten, and it's not in Denmark. It's in the Fl insurance company.

And the fact that 60% of Citizen's deficit comes from a couple hundred million dollar beach homes. They had extensive damage, but with the premium structure from Citizens, they get a huge break in insurance. A million dollar home owner may only pay $4-5K for insurance, but your $150K home has a premium of $3K. Based on both square footage and replacement cost of a home, the big expensive home owners pay far, far less than they should in insurance. The average homeowner subsidizes the expensive home owner's insurance. And rates are supposed to almost double again, so expect your $3K premium to be $5-6K next year, plus any increases from the increase in your proerty value. And now they are adding a 1% tax to these premiums.
