PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Mary Starrett, a former talk show host who recently helped start an anti-abortion group, says she plans to run for governor as the nominee of the conservative Constitution Party.
Starrett, 51, told The Oregonian newspaper Tuesday that she will seek the party's nomination when it holds a convention in Lake Oswego on Saturday.
If Starrett wins the nomination, she would be the only anti-abortion candidate in the race. Gov. Ted Kulongoski, a Democrat, and Republican challenger Ron Saxton support a woman's right to choose. Saxton, however, has said he would back some limits on the procedure, such as parental notification.
The Constitution Party did not field a candidate in the 2002 governor's race because it did not want to draw votes from Kevin Mannix, the Republican candidate that year who shares the Constitution Party's opposition to abortion.
That isn't a concern this year.
"If the Republicans were doing their job, I wouldn't be doing this," Starrett told the paper.
Too bad, but the Republicans need to get the clue.
I don't know if the Republican challenger had a chance in this race but it doesn't matter now, I expect Oregon will continue to have Democratic Governor.
Oh come on now! The GOP is so wrapped up in the North American Union, the UN, buying votes with social programs, and pandering to illegal immigrants, that they don't have time for clues. This reminds me of DeLay's comment regarding the budget "There is no fat to cut.".
A few huge pieces of fat that spring to my mind would be the defunding of the EPA, BATF, HUD, DEA and the cabinet departments of Education and Energy. Put all those civil servants through marksmanship training, give them rifles and send them to Nogales.
The CP might as well take a shot. Oregon is certainly lost to the pubs. It's to the left of California and only slightly to the right of Massachusetts.
There is another independent candidate also likely to be on the ballot, a liberal Republican from Central Oregon. He'll probably draw more from Kulongoski, so the whole thing might end up as a wash.
I hate to point this out because it is so obvious and so common. The bias here is pathetic!
You're way, way off.
Oregon is about even...only a slight Democrat edge. The state House is controlled by the GOP.
Feelin much better now!
