Rep. Peter King: Immigration Bill Is Dead
Newsmax ^ | 5/30/06

As far as the powerful chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee is concerned, the controversial Senate bill on immigration reform is as dead as a duck.

Appearing Tuesday on "Lou Dobbs Tonight," Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., told Dobbs that he couldn’t imagine how the Senate bill "could ever be considered in the House of Representatives [when] the overwhelming majority of Republicans are against it.” This, he said "is amnesty. The more the senators deny it, Democrat and Republican, the more they deny it, the more the president denies it, it's amnesty. And the American people don't want it. I've never seen a disconnect between the will of the people and the actions of elected officials as we've seen in the Senate.

"And this is just a total disconnect, and as a Republican, our base is totally against it. But it goes beyond it; these are Reagan Republicans, and Democrats, independents, moderates -- across the board people are opposed. They want border security first.”

Commenting on Dobbs’ remark that Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., had described the Senate bill as the will of the Senate, King snapped: "The will of the Senate was not the will of the people. What really offends me about this is they say it has to be comprehensive, which means, on the one hand we have to protect the rights of the American people by having border security.

"On the other hand we have to protect the rights of illegal immigrants. So they are suggesting there's an equivalency between the rights of legal Americans and the rights of illegal immigrants, and you can't do both at the same time. So they are trying to balance the two, and when you do that, you're never going to get border security. After 20 years of promises, we don't have border security. There's no reason to think we're going to get it now unless we focus all our at attention on that.”

When Dobbs asked if it is possible four and a half years after 9/11 "for this White House to comprehend, for that Senate to comprehend, there are about 280 million Americans out here who deserve protection at their ports and at their borders and that the people are sick and tired. They've had a belly full of the nonsense. They want the borders secured. They want the ports secured, and really don't want to hear any more about free trade and impediments to commerce.”

Said King: "You're right, it's almost now, almost five years since Sept. 11. And border security is homeland security. Our world changed on Sept. 11. If there was ever the luxury of looking the other way on illegal immigration, it ended on Sept. 11. We have to secure the border, not just for economic and cultural and social reasons, we have to secure it to preserve our security, our homeland security.”

I will support a path to citizenship for illegals currently in the country, contingent of the following factors:

1. Good conduct and a clean arrest record are required.
2. English proficiency and knowledge of US Civics are required.
3. Citizenship rights (i.e. voting, entitlements, Social Security) are not granted before citizenship.
4. Identity theft and tax fraud are permenant disqualifiers for citizenship.

But none of this makes a lick of sense unless the border is first secured and a regularized guest worker program is put in place to deal with new arrivals. And by "secured", I mean secured. A real wall with real agents with real guns. No "virtual" wall, no penetrable impediments. The goal should be zero illegal crossings.

I don't agree with King on everything, but he's not a RINO. I still don't understand his uncritical support, bordering on devotion, to IRA terrorists.

Yes, it's senseless to be fighting your own base this close to an election.

It's almost as if the RINOs want the Democrats to do well at the polls this year.

"It's RINO's like McCain, Hagel, Lindsey, and Specter that have declared their agenda is to destroy conservatives"

We could be screwed on this immigration bill if the "gang of 14" mentality makes a comeback, and these clowns think they're doing the right thing with a nice happy compromise.

God Bless King!

Now, if we could just put a lid on the Latino movement mouth pieces who rear their ugly heads on the talk shows, including my favorite one, Lou Dobbs.

I'd like to see them totally cut off because when this thing goes to the House, we are going to be bombarded with their ilk and protest Marches.

They are way too quiet now..

That why its better to vote for a RINO than a rat any day. At least sometimes the RINO will vote with you.

You mean a RINO like Senator Robert Byrd. ;-)

"The will of the Senate was not the will of the people"

I don't see why anybody is surprised.

The House is elected every two years, the Senate every six. With almost no accountability and election practically guaranteed for life for most Senators, they are free to do whatever their biggest contributors want.

The abominable 17th Amendment assured they are no longer responsible to their respective States, and the loooong terms of office assures them they can do almost anything and the fickle public will likely forget and vote for them again strictly on their acquired name recognition.

Meanwhile, their exalted opinions of themselves climbs higher and higher as they slap each others' backs in comity and call each other "esteemed colleagues" and "distinguished gentleman". I am so sick of these haughty people. They have come to represent not us, but what is worst in Washington.

I've never seen a disconnect between the will of the people and the actions of elected officials as we've seen in the Senate.

And the White House, for that matter.

But, then again, the House members are accountable to the people every two years, so that might well have something to do with the fact that they are listening to the people.

I think it is more simple. The House is on a 2 year leash and the leash is jerked this November. Heck even Christopher Shays not a rabid conservative has reversed field to oppose the Senate Bill after his town meeting folk told him he would not be elected if he supported it. That is how you turn RINOs into Conservatives. You tell them their job depends on it and you back it up with your vote for a Conservative. The Senators think because of their staggered 6 year terms they can get away with this but if we stick it to the class I group (2007) (Both Democrats and RINOs) this time around in November, we have little to lose and they have much to learn. And this issue has enough legs to unseat some Rats if the GOP is as smart as it thinks it is. If it isn't that smart (more likely) the the conservative Constitution party may make a dent in their base.

Not surprising O'Reilly would select this poll since he is a pro-amnesty hack. Border Security sure but he favors the "a path to citizenship" nonsense.

If I lived in Pete King's district, I would actually vote for him, having seen this. I disagree with him about a lot of things, but this stand alone makes him worth it!

I wonder how "censure" Petey feels about Irish illegals?

No. In Connecticut, that is how you turn RINOs into former congressmen.

Yeah, we'll vote for the RINO*. But is it OK with you if we b!tch about it a little first? We'll knuckle under, but don't ask us to smile.

*Except for John McCain. I will vote for Hillary! herself before I pull a lever for John McCain.

I was talking to a Border Patrol Agent the other night, he said many of the illegals he catches are saying, "I am here for the amnesty." He said when he tells them there is no amnesty, they don't believe him. That tells me that the flow probably won't decrease, if anything it may increase.

Yup. They are being stampeded out of the country by their own government which already apparently thought they had this legislation "in the bag" because they had the Senate bought and paid for on the issue.

Even Chief RINO Chris Shays (CT) "gets it". He has held town meetings, where it has become clear to him that amnesty is completely unacceptable.

BUMP!

Haven't heard many boo-birds against Dobbs here lately... either the schills for the Admin have finally had second thoughts about their own support of a really bad idea come hell or high water, or they simply know they are beaten.

The truth won out. At least this time. Let's just pray that we can prevent the Rats from getting a decisive Pro-Illegal majority in Congress as a result of this calculated series of attacks on the Base by W and Rove.

He probably doesn't think too much about Irish illegals. Do GP's in Minnesota very often think about tropical diseases? I honestly can't remember the last time I came across anyone from Ireland - legal or illegal. On the other hand, on an average day here in Los Angeles, I come across maybe 4 or 5 illegals every single day.
