On a Marine Base, Disbelief Over Charges
New York Times ^ | May 29, 2006 | Carolyn Marshall

CAMP PENDLETON, Calif., May 29 — In this "company town" where everything and everyone caters to the well-being of the Marine Corps, there is no shortage of people, both military and civilian, who are willing to give the benefit of the doubt to the troops accused of unjustified killings last November in Haditha, Iraq.

Relatives and neighbors gathered near the shrouded bodies of civilians said to have been killed by marines in Haditha, Iraq, in November.

As you said, most of us are willing to wait for the actual trial and evidence, not some media portrayal of what happened.

This kind of thing happened during WWII and every other war ever fought; this war has seen less of this kind of thing than any other war.

And I notice the left didn't mind that Clinton's campaign in Kosovo fought from 25,000 feet in the air killed thousands and thousands of innocent civilians.

As you've seen on this and other threads, there are already quite a few people who are saying that it's no big deal, even if Marines did do it.

I've seen a couple. Their number is dwarfed by the judges/juries among us already handing out sentences.

Yep. I've seen that. It's a good sign. Let's hope for the best. But you, above all, should be just a little concerned when the sources of conservative commentators like Laura Ingraham are telling her flat out it will NOT be good. I suspect they've looked at the angles already when they said that.

British Troops In Iraq Are Afraid to Open Fire

When that happens to our soldiers, it's time to gather up our marbles and go home.

Gung-ho US Troops Urged To Be More British

Both of these articles turn my stomach. They want our soldiers to be walking targets.

Your ill-informed logic doesn't work with me, either, nor, fortunately, with our USMC, which knows better.

This story may very well be true. This is war. Accidents happen. Ugly things happen. These brave young men are all human just like the rest of us and are subject to the very same over reactions that we are. That doesn't mean that our Marines are evil. Anyone of us when placed in a highly stressful position where our lives are on the line might react the same way. Please do NOT judge these guys until ALL of the facts are out. Most Americans are fair and will wait until all of the facts come out. The usual cast of characters (Kerry, Kennedy, Murtha) has already found them guilty. That is wrong. God bless our brave young Marines that are fighting for our freedoms to be able to sit here in our pajamas and post of FR.

Patton had to hang four GIs who were raping Italian women in Sicily in 1943, and he did so without compunction or without hesitation when they were proven guilty

What a fascinating concept.

Yes, if they executed them in said fashion, they need to be punished according to the UCMJ.

If, as I suspect, they did no such thing -- they were either collateral damage, or the Jihadis are staging this -- then every American worthy of the name needs to come down on Murtha and the MSM like a hellfire missile.

Denial is not a river in Egypt. Conservatives, above all, should be clear-eyed. Patton had no problem arresting, trying, and EXECUTING four soldiers found guilty of rape in Italy. This behavior---if proven---is not tolerated now, and has never been tolerated.

Their number is dwarfed by the judges/juries among us already handing out sentences.

Including, I presume, those who say "not guilty."

I really, truly hope that this turns out to be a myth. But if it's not ... will you be among the men, or the sheep?

Not to be argumentative, LOL, but I'm not sure why you mean I above all should be concerned about what conservative sources are saying.

I probably hear 1 hour of talk radio a week and that's typically when I'm in the car. Rush and Laura, etc., don't speak for me, although I think each in their own way have contributed to the conservative movement.

Scram LS, you seem to need to "prepare".

I don't either. But do I think one or two guys, driven by anger and the loss of a buddy, lost control? It seems so.

I think if you took all the fire "incidents" after the end of "major combat operations," and---if true---look at this this incident as a %, it's statistically insignificant. THAT is the message that needs to get out.

Your lame implication just gave you away. I'm done trying to reason with you.

I agree 100% about Murtha. He is slime. A disgrace to the Marines.

But you and I both know that your rant against me didn't originate in a story about Murtha. You were responding to the likelihood that a very dark incident happened.

Ditto. Every word.

These Marines are innocent until proven guilty.

They haven't even been charged yet.

And now Hillary Clinton (the *itch) has spoken out about this matter; she's calling for a Senate investigation of the "cover up":

I've been telling my husband for years that the day will come we won't find men to serve, troops will be afraid to fire at anyone for any reason, and we'll be like the UN: Peacekeepers wearing goofy hats.

Did you serve? I'm quite familiar with the USMC and the UCMJ.
