Marine at Haditha: 'I Can Still Smell the Blood'
ABC News ^ | May 29, 2006 | JONATHAN KARL

Posted on 05/29/2006 6:12:03 PM PDT by Marli

Only hours after Iraqi civilians were killed, a second team of Marines was sent in to take the victims' bodies to a local morgue.

Lance Corp. Ryan Briones was among the Marines sent in to recover the bodies, and he told the Los Angeles Times he is still haunted by what he saw, including a young girl who was shot in the head.

"[The victims] ranged from little babies to adult males and females," Briones told the newspaper. "I can still smell the blood."

Briones says he and another Marine were told to photograph the bodies. Military officials say those photos — which they say show people shot at close range in the head and chest — clearly contradict initial reports that the civilians were killed by a roadside bomb.

After the explosion, Marines began a methodical sweep of homes looking for the bomber or people who knew his identity, according to officials briefed on the investigation. At some point Marines entered three nearby homes, killing the people inside.

Briones said he didn't see any of that.

"It was such a blur. Smoky and smelled like an explosion," he said. "I only saw T.J. because he was right there."

Briones and his team evacuated the two other troops wounded in the blast, and then they returned to the Sparta home base.

"We went back to the firm base and just waited," Briones said. "A lot of people were mad. Everyone had just had a [terrible] feeling about what had happened to T.J."

He said he and his team remained at the camp until they were called back to the scene of the explosion around 5:30 p.m. the same day. When they arrived, Briones said, most of the Marines on the site were sergeants or above, including several officers.

If and when anybody is charged in this case, despite the verdict, I will never condemn them, If these worthless lawyers in this country can excuse cold blooded murderers because their client was mistreated by his/her parents, Than every single Marine defending this nation has ten times more of an excuse for their actions than the clients of these Liberal lawyers do. I feel the same way......what is that saying.....until I walk in their shoes.....

Yes...and it looks like she is "qualified"...

I did notice in the article that Murtha was their "source"...

From what I have heard, even today from Peter Pace, the investigation hasn't even been completed..and so, it seems like it would be a little difficult for Murtha to know anything.

And, in the article you posted, I believe, it said that neither of these two Marines that took the pictures had been interviewed yet....how can an invesigation be complete if they haven't even been interviewed???

What I want to know is: Was Jenjis Khan involved? Where was John Kerry? Whose turn was it to watch him?

Stop putting words in my mouth. You've already indicated you would not convict any of these Marines of murder, no matter what a courts-martial proved.

By that logic, why should there be any rules of engagement at all?

Just mow down as many Iraqis as you see.

Every Iraqi is the enemy, it appears. Even those that aren't.

Yeah, something besides that aforementioned blood smells here.

One of the "few" speaks. If American soldiers were to butcher and eat Iraqi children, it just wouldn't matter to you would it?

Now we will see if this guy's story holds up or not. It should be easy to corroborate.

I don't know why he is speaking out. Maybe his superiors simply want to get the news out there.

Why would a Marine talk to a reporter of the LAslimes?

Something smells here...and not the blood of innocent Iraqis.

(Well, I believed the story when I reported it, but yeah, the Marine said something similar, I mean, I wrote down, I mean, no I did not misquote, I quoted what I wrote down and I mean...) Yeah Right!

My God, We owe these Marines nothing less and Sink should know better than to fall for this crap

I happen to agree with sinkspur on this -- there are far too many people on this thread already looking for excuses and wishing this away.

I've got a bad feeling about this one -- I think somebody in a Marine uniform (I will not call him a Marine) will be found to have done it. I think you'd better be prepared for that.

I am definitely more in your catagory 2...I AM having a hard time believing it.

I guess that makes me a "wait and see" person though...because until I see...I want to wait before I have them convicted.

Remember how many were ready to convict Lt. Pantano from the video of him???

He was found not guilty.

We need the "other side of the story". Were these civilians or terrorists? Who killed them? What events brought on the killings? Once we know that, then we as a nation proceed accordingly. From a prior post, it sounds like this is a very dangerous place to begin with.
