The Washington Post reports this morning that prospects for the Senate's immigration package are dimming, due to House members' concerns about November's election:

Republican House members facing the toughest races this fall are overwhelmingly opposed to any deal that provides illegal immigrants a path to citizenship -- an election-year dynamic that significantly dims the prospects that President Bush will win the immigration compromise he is seeking, according to Republican lawmakers and leadership aides. Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) will not allow a vote on a House-Senate compromise that does not have the support of most GOP lawmakers or one that would undermine the reelection chances of his at-risk members, aides said. According to GOP lawmakers and strategists, about 75 percent of the 231 House Republicans are steadfastly opposed to the Senate bill or even a watered-down version of it.

The Post's article cites poll's that supposedly show strong support for the administration's plan, but, as one House member says, "they must not be polling anyone in [my] District."

It's not possible that 75% of Republicans want a bill that makes these folks citizens as you are claiming.

Most polls show the exact opposite, whatever you are quoting is simply what they call an "outlier" in the polling business.

I have spoken against what I call the "border bots" for weeks, but I absolutely hate what the Senate voted for and I am pretty sure most engaged US citizens do as well. It is a travesty, and passing it would lead to a Republican disaster in 06.

My graph shows there is ZERO net immigration into Taiwan, unlike we have in this country.
And my point all along has been that Taiwan's economy has been smoking despite them not having any massive immigration into that country.


Meanwhile you have yet to post anything showing there is big immigration into Taiwan like you claimed.

What does Byrd's approval number today, have to do with a poll from last year, that showed his approval number falling, at a time when he used to spew out Bush-hate all the time?
It's called democracy. When you displease your constituents with something they don't like, you stop doing that what they don't like, and your constituents are happy again.
You will notice that Byrd has since voted for practically all President Bush's judicial nominees.
This is exactly what House members are doing today by listening to their constituents, which is what they should do if they don't want to hand The House over to Nancy Pelosi and her moonbat hoards in November.
This election is going to be won or lost on immigration, and we are on the right side of the law and the issues.

The Post's reporters clearly think it's unfortunate that the House may be knuckling under to the wishes of the voters: Many senators, by contrast, represent more diverse populations and are therefore more sensitive to the concerns of Hispanics. Moreover, only one-third of senators face reelection this fall, so it is easier for them to ignore the short-term Republican politics, which are dominated by concerns about any program that resembles amnesty for illegal immigrants. The Post says "short-term Republican politics," when what it means is, the will of the American people.

Pretty appropriate I think. This from a normally Bush supportive site.

Pence proposals are as different from the Senate Bill as day is from night.
Voting for the Senate Bill will be potical suicide for our Republican congressmen in November, and they know it.
You see, we are in the majority in congress and we intend to stay that way. :)

Correct. They are ignoring their voters.

The Senate by design is less affected by popular pressure and sentiment than the House is. On any given vote, two-thirds of the Senate is four or more years removed from the wrath of the voters. On the other hand, senators are ALWAYS and immediately affected by the moods and pocketbooks of special interests.

This vote is just about what you would expect when money speaks more loudly and directly than the voters do to two-thirds of the Senate. The senators can pocket the loot from the dishonest employers who are undermining our immigration laws and figure the worst of the backlash will blow over by the time they're up for reelection.

If you want to know how popular sentiment is shaping up (quite apart from self-serving polls dished up by the amnestas) watch what happens in the House on this issue. The members of the House are constantly running for reelection and feel voter pressure every day.

You really don't realize that everything posted on these threads stays on these threads do you? Here's exactly what I said way back in post 35. "And all three of those countries have a very healthy and large immigrant population." The population of Taiwan is 22 million. From this site Taiwan Stats you'll read the following...

Oookay.
Let me see 500,000 out of a population of 22 million.. extrapolate and assuming an American population of 300 million, that makes it 6 million immigrants.
Not quite the same as illegals into this country is it?
Now mind that includes visitors on business and tourists.
Also mind that practically all of them were actually let in by the Taiwanese government at the points of entry. They decide who enters their country, not the foreigners

Thats a very far cry from what we have here, when Mexicans decide if they want to live here or not, and we don't have any say in it.

Absolutely. It is critical that we conservatives who vote in the general election this fall withhold our votes from any of the treasonous Senators who voted for this bill regardless of the political consequences. If we fail to do this, it will be a tacit endorsement of their vote.

HUH? All 3 countries have very few immigrants. Signapore has some guest workers that are VERY regulated, Tiwan hasnt had many immigrants since the last wave of refugees from red China arrived in the 60s, and South Korea has almost no immigrants.

The thing about people of your ilk, to be blunt, is that its so easy to refute your claims with well known facts.
