Westly, Angelides ad campaigns take negative turn in final stretch

Radio listeners have discovered the Swainson's hawk is doomed and it's all Phil Angelides' fault. TV viewers, however, have learned that Steve Westly favors "taxing the middle class (and) letting big corporations off the hook.''

With little more than a week before the June 6 primary election, the two Democratic candidates for governor are going all negative all the time, hoping to convince uninterested voters not that they're so good, but that their opponent is so bad.

The nonstop mud-slinging even has supporters concerned.

Larry Fahn, immediate past national president of the Sierra Club, was speaking Friday with reporters defending Angelides against Westly's TV ads attacking Angelides' environmental record.

But while Fahn dutifully complained that Westly had "gone into the gutter'' with charges that Angelides was tightly linked to "friends in the oil industry,'' he also expressed concern about the tack both men were taking.

"I'm distressed to see both campaigns going negative,'' he said. "I'd rather see both candidates talking what they're going to do to improve California's environment.''

As for the estimated one-third of likely Democratic voters who haven't made a choice in the election, the nasty tone of the attack ads could keep them away from the ballot booths, said Barbara O'Connor, a political communications professors at Cal State Sacramento.

The negative ads "erode even further the perception people have about politicians,'' she said.

Westly, the state controller, and Angelides, the state treasurer, vowed they would not be the first to use negative ads in this campaign.

I see the Westly ads about every day. Pro-abortion, but an environment freak. Makes me sick.

I think that Welsey would be easier for Aronld to beat than Phil because of the Davis type moves he made. The last one letting Brooks and Nobles of the hook on taxes at the same time they were setting up fundrisers for him. My guess it is Phil because he can make it up on the ground.

I just saw Angelides ad against Westly. YOWZA!

Joseph Cari... pled guilty... deals with Westly... pensions.... CalPERS....

It definitely left you with one message: "Westly is a crook"
(of course, they never used those words)

You mean the pretty boy commercials? LOL.

You will definitely notice these anti-Westly ads.
Lots of pics of newspaper headlines, etc. Ominous narration...
I hardly ever notice commercials, but I stopped in my tracks for that one.

Its bizarre. Help me out, for I think I'm living in the Twilight Zone! When was the last time you saw two liberals beat each up about tax increases?? I don't believe this! (laughing)
