US ANNOUNCES AIRLIFT SUPPORT TO AUSTRALIA

CAMP SMITH, Hawaii - At the request of the Government of Australia, the United States is providing military airlift to assist in positioning Australian Defence Force personnel and equipment in support of peace operations in East Timor.

The rapid positioning of these forces will enable the Australian Defence Forces to better respond to the situation in East Timor. There continues to be unrest between East Timorese military forces and breakaway groups of police and military. The political situation in Dili remains fragile and violence is ongoing. East Timor has asked for international assistance from Australia, New Zealand Malaysia, and Portugal. -- PACOM --

Posted because a few Americans have asked me in recent days if the US had offered help to Australia in its operations in East Timor. Further information - also from PACOM:

HICKAM AIR FORCE BASE, Hawaii -- A C-17 prepares for takeoff bound for the Solomon Islands. U.S. Pacific Command is providing two C-17 aircrafts to assist in positioning Australian Defence Force personnel and equipment in support of their peace operations in East Timor. The C-17 will transport Australian Defence Forces from the Solomon Islands to Australia.

I spent the night with an Aussie unit in Vietnam - took me several minutes to figure out that a "lie-low" was an air mattress.

LOL....my brother in law is Aussie with a pretty thick accent. They live in WV and when I visited them for a bit, although I'd gotten used to his accent, how he knew what the neighbors were saying is beyond me. I said "excuse me?" several times during that visit.

Years ago I was romantically involved with a red-headed female Aussie...I would enjoy closing my eyes and just listening to her speak...

I figure God's probably got an Australian accent... :)

I know what you mean...A shame they and the British couldn't do a better job at speaking English...

I work with an Aussie. Beautiful girl, love her voice. Could do without her politics. But she's 26. Still time to get a clue.
