New Jersey Senate Kean (R) 40% Menendez (D) 37%
Rasmussen Reports ^ | May 26, 2006

In New Jersey's U.S. Senate campaign, Republican Tom Kean, Jr. (R) now leads Senator Robert Menendez (D) by just three points, 40% to 37%.

Last month, Kean, the son of the former governor, led 43% to 36%. But most of our polls of this race have shown toss-ups.

Menendez is the incumbent, but an appointee, and a recent one. He was installed in January 2006 when fellow Democrat Jon Corzine left the U.S. Senate to become the state's Governor.

Should this have a "RINO" alert?

I have the feeling that if Menendez was the Republican in the race, the media would be trying to find a way to link him to the infamous Lyle and Erik, who killed their parents.

It's a sad state of affairs when the GOP's best chance of a pickup in U.S. Senate races comes from a RINO. But better half a conservative than none at all.

Since there are no feasible good choices in this case, the best option available is to bite the bullet and vote for Kean.

Big issue amongst NJers is immigration. Kean announced over a week ago he was against amnesty and for strong borders, while Menendez voted for the Senate bill which is for amnesty (plus loop holes for false documentation and tax evasion). Issue cuts across party lines and independents. If Kean wins in November (in a blue state), immigration would play a key role. Will send a message to the pro immigrant GOP in the Senate.

Good point. Also, I think that the pro-amnesty protests haven't helped Menendez.

Kean announced over a week ago he was against amnesty and for strong borders,...

Just to get elected. Then like all the rest he'll find that "we really do need amnesty and open borders." Count on it.

Kean would be the democrat in pretty much any state outside of New Jersey, New York, California, Massachusetts, Vermont among a few others.

If he is from New Jersey, I am sure he is a RINO, but he is better then the Democrat.

This is an important race, if we can win the seat here the D's have 0 chance at winning the Senate, and we have an outside shot of either breaking even or gaining seats.
