WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President George W. Bush left on Friday for a holiday weekend with his longtime friend Don Evans amid speculation that the former commerce secretary was a top candidate to succeed Treasury Secretary John Snow.
The Wall Street Journal online reported that Evans had emerged as the front-runner for the Treasury post.
A Republican with close ties to the White House also told Reuters that he believed Evans was the leading candidate.
A barrage of media stories in the past two days have suggested that Snow may leave within a month and people with close ties to the administration have said they believe the White House is moving close to a decision on his successor.

Im growing very tired of this club.
Who will you vote for in 08 ?
"Who will you vote for in 08 ?"
I know that you didn't ask me but as of now, I think the only Pubbie who can win is Condi. The same old, tired, rich, white men won't carry the mail this time. And I'm a tired, rich, white man; so, I think I can say that.
Run Condi; run.
Thanks for the post on an important subject subject. I would love to see a Treasury secretary who understands classical principles of monetary policy. Snow has been pretty good on tax policy, and I suspect Evans would be about the same (maybe better). But U. S. monetary policy is seriously adrift, as it has been for the past 35 years. President needs to add an honest dollar (with a value that doesn't change) to the top of his agenda. He could do that without even Congress, I think. But Treasury has no one to help him.
Good question. I don't see anyone yet that's to the right enough that will push a conservative agenda. Newt, Allen, Condi, Colburn, Sessions, other.?. It's dispiriting.
I think weve given the republican elites enough chances don't you?

If she would come around to be even slightly pro-life (that is, not adamantly pro-abortion), I'd support her. The only thing I don't like about her is her firm pro-abortion stance, and unfortunately, that tells one a lot about a person.
It's Condi with her husband!
No way !

AGREE :)
You remember her famous (infamous?) comment in an interview don't you?
no? WHAT WAS IT ?
She referred to Bush as her husband during an interview on TV. She immediately corrected herself. I'l see if I can find a link anywhere.
One thing is certain. Through all the troubled times ahead, Rice will always appear calm. She has good reason to feel safe and secure for she has the unquestioned support of the only man who matters: Bush. When last year she referred to Bush as 'my husband' it was a Freudian slip that reflected how close Rice and the Bush clan have become. When it comes to Rice, the little girl from Birmingham who now bestrides the world stage, she really is part of the family.

I understand; that's my big issue as well. She is really NOT adamantly pro-abortion. She says she is "Selectively" pro-Choice i.e. in the event of the rape, incest, life of the mother.............you know the spiel.
Most mature black women are adamantly opposed to abortion. That's why so many grandmas in the black community are raising grandkids.
I'd like to see her take a hard-line stance against abortion because I still think she's the only one who can beat the Beast.
I remember that comment. With as much as she has on her mind and changing times zones around the world three or four times a week; one can get somewhat discombulated at times. I've made bigger goofs publicly. The latest was when I said: "I'd give my wife for my life" when actually I meant the opposite. Good for a laugh from the crowd, however.
I haven't been really happy with her performance at State because it seems to me that she has basically been ignoring Latin America (where all sorts of bad things are happening). However, it is possible that she is doing work behind the scenes, or even that she is doing things that our MSM doesn't bother to report because they hate her so much. But I agree that she could beat the Beast, if the latter runs, or probably even beat most other Dem candidates, male or female.
Even if her opposition to abortion is limited, I wish that she would express it. I have never heard her say anything opposed to abortion in any way, though. And as for blacks being opposed to abortion, I believe they have a very high abortion rate, primarily because they have been targeted by Planned Parenthood. There are many lower income black women who have lots of kids, but that is for the purpose of collecting benefits. Upper income black women have a lower birth rate than upper income white women, and I have never met a single one of them opposed to abortion. That doesn't mean they don't exist, but obviously, they aren't very common.

It's still early yet. Let's keep our ears open.
