About The Avian Flu What do we do about the possibility of a bird flu pandemic? Many people state that they've understood this scare to be blown out of proportion. Others say that even if it does come, there's nothing that can be to prevent the destruction. Still others have become completely frantic and stressed.
To all of these people, we suggest doing more research. Calm down, prep-up and read.
The information on this site should not be read in a dramatic light. This is not to scare or frighten; hopefully these suggestions will put people in a non-frantic, thinking-ahead, preparation mode. This list is certainly lacking, and any addendums are welcome.

Pinging the list..
No one believes in bird flu, but a handful of crackpots and some govt. types
I've gotten to the point where it bugs me so much , we sit way away from people......
first, I think its disruptive to a solemn Mass to be shaking hands in the middle of it, and secondly, people are wiping their noses and touching their mouths etc and then we hold hands and then we shake hands and then we go up to the Priest and get Communion.....
I have seen people wearing the little plastic gloves wipe their noses while handling food... with the glove.(Yikes, I'm outta there!)
With an animal vector involved, people might not think of the possibilities for contamination that exist, regardless of the disease.
In the event of an extremely deadly pathogen, current common habits would spread it pretty fast.
Fine, grasshopper! And New Orleans hardly ever suffers devastating hurricanes, either! Just enjoy today and let tomorrow take care of itself. FEMA will help you out if anything goes wrong.
I'll take a look, if I can't tonight I'll post a link tomorrow.
Here it is:

(I posted a bunch of stuff on there that I was going to re-write in a more sensible form; I re-wrote it but never posted it. Maybe now is the right time.)

The first, and the only important thing to do, is to close US airports to arriving flights from Asia after significant interhuman transmission is documented there (yes, stranding thousands of Americans).
This is the one thing that we will never do.
I don't know, Jim, you could be right. According to Mike Leavitt the USA just shipped a lot of Tamiflu overseas, the amount and destination unspecified...if I read his remarks correctly, this was to be controlled and dispersed by the USA. Might be for embassies to give out to our citizens working overseas, in the event.
Really? Tell that to the people who died from it..

Please do post your revised list. Much of this information would be useful in any type of disease outbreak.

Thanks for this post, SJ. I'm bookmarking it for reference. - OB1
Hi Cherry,
During flu season, our church makes an announcement before mass that we can refrain from shaking hands during the sign of peace. Most people still shake hands though. Maybe you can suggest this in your church?
Jill
I'll post it on the main Avian Flu Preparedness Project thread in a couple of days, and maybe Smokin' Joe or I will ping the list. Are you on his ping list?
And yes, the info is useful for staying healthy and taking care of "regular" illnesses as well. Whether it will help if someone actually gets the H5N1, who knows? But an ounce of prevention is certainly worth more than a pound of cure in this case.
