Studies have traced HIV to a man who gave a blood sample in 1959 in Kinshasa, then called Leopoldville. Later analysis found the AIDS virus.

I had never heard this before. I had always heard that AIDs started in the 70s (as a CIA experiment to kill black people per one of my more paranoid friends). So it has existed well before the 60s.

Some years ago I read a newspaper article about a black teenager in that city who died of a mysterious disease in the mid- or late 1960s in St. Louis. The doctors who treated him were so puzzled by the case that they saved a blood sample. After the AIDS epidemic spread the sample was tested and it turned out he had had AIDS.
