That's about it. Said they should be sealed until the confusion is worked out.
People, relax. There is a Constitutional issue to be resolved here. The Judiciary approved a warrant to take the Legislative branch's documents. That is not a matter that is trivial. The USSC likely will get involved.
Bush is HELPING the prosecution by having these sealed. If there was anything in them that would develop the investigation, and the USSC later finds that the seizure of them was not permitted JEFFERSON WOULD WALK. Bush is making sure that doesn't happen. With the documents sealed, the case can proceed against Jefferson without his lawyers claiming the case was built on inadmissible evidence.
Jefferson must have threatened to roll over on everyone. That's probably what it is. He told them "I'm not going down alone, all your faces on the front page of every newspaper for the next 6 months, blah, blah, blah." That has to be it.
Cunningham obviously followed what he was ordered to do..and turn over his own stuff...
Jefferson has ignored subpoenas for MONTHS...
BUT, if this was a Republican, wouldn't you be HAPPY that the documents were locked up?
What if this was Delay?
Isn't it better to just cool off...rather than have every single REpublican on Capitol Hill get on TV and accuse Bush of being a TYRANT, yet again?
>>>The Bush White House has moved from tone deaf to stone cold deaf. So be it.
Why would you say that? He's just trying to put documents in limbo until this gets worked out.>>>
Until all WHAT gets worked out? The Congressional Temper Tantrum that they are to be held to the same laws WE, the People are?
It is a bit funny if you say it realllllly reallllly fast 25000 times! LOL ;-)
Is Bush working onhis Billy J Clinton impression? What's next... Selling the F-22 plans to China?
What the hell is the matter with Bush?
Bush orders Jefferson records sealed 45 days
Thu May 25, 2006 3:24pm ETWASHINGTON (Reuters) - President George W. Bush on Thursday ordered records seized from Louisiana Democratic Rep. William Jefferson's office to be sealed for 45 days in order to work out a dispute over the documents with the U.S. Congress.
Leaders of the House of Representatives are outraged that the FBI seized a computer hard drive and two boxes of papers from Jefferson's office. They contend the search violated the constitutional separation of powers between the executive and legislative branches
In a statement, Bush said he was taking the unusual step of directing the Justice Department to seal all the materials recovered from Jefferson's office last weekend for the next 45 days.
"This period will provide both parties more time to resolve the issues in a way that ensures that materials relevant to the ongoing criminal investigation are made available to prosecutors in a manner that respects the interests of a co-equal branch of government," Bush said.
Well said. It was the smart move. Perfect, really.
Now everyone can take a deep breath and get it resolved.
According to whom?
So let me see if I have this right.
Republicans have somewhat (weakly) defended the president regarding the warrantless wiretap program run out of NSA.
The FBI gets a warrant and searches a Congressman's office and Danny Hastert and Majority Leader Boehner have a hissy fit.
So we, the little people don't need to have the government actually take out a warrant to spy on us. (And I'm a supporter of the NSA program).
But Congressional offices can be searched even with a warrant?
Do I have that right?
I think the the entire Washington establishment has gone stone cold deaf, with a couple of exceptions. Heck, Newt was condemning this raid - one would think someone allegedly as smart as he is could read the Constitution and realize there is a felony exemption in the privileges of Congress from arrest and search.
Why 45 days, I wonder?
Who's confused?
The FBI served a legal warrent.
Pretty straight forward.
It's embarrassing. No matter what Bush does, it's wrong.
Some of these people are downright contemptible.
*rolls eyes*
Putting a 45 day hold on the process in order to make sure that he can legally sic the FBI on them is no making a "two-tiered system of justice."
W is giving the Justice department time to make sure all of its legal ducks are in a row, because this could cause a huge shakeup in the power structure of the national government. He would be foolish not to cover all the angles and have an appeals court judge throw the whole thing out on a technicality.
No one is being allowed to get away with anything other than hyperventilating.
Damn straight. The congressional policy with confidential documents is to leak them to the press!
But they didn't invade Cunningham's House office.
bingo
I'm not sure of all the details .. but sounds like he's giving it time to be all sorted out
Sadly, the Republican genetic defect of spinelessness is showing............again........
