Karachi: Pakistan's Islamist parties will hold nationwide demonstrations against The Da Vinci Code later this week, to protest the film's "offensive" alternative take on the story of Jesus Christ, an opposition lawmaker said yesterday.
The adaptation of Dan Brown's best-selling novel, the story of a Vatican cover-up involving Christ and his supposed offspring, has recorded a $224 million global opening.
"The film is offensive towards a holy figure dear to all religions," Liaquat Baloch, deputy secretary-general of Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal, the main Islamist political alliance, said.
Films or cartoons that hurt the sentiments of any religion in the name of culture should be rejected by the people, Balouch said, adding that rallies against the film would be held after Friday prayers.
Misunderstanding
No Pakistani film exhibitor had planned to screen the movie, but sellers of pirated DVDs and VCDs were expecting to be able to offer it for sale by the end of the day.
"There is a huge demand for The Da Vinci Code," Salman Shakir, a shopkeeper in the city of Karachi. "We already have several orders lined up even though the initial prints are poor quality."
Christians, who make up less then 10 per cent of predominantly Muslim Pakistan, fear the film could spread misunderstanding about their faith.
"We want people of other religions to also protest against the film," said Javed Williams of the Pakistan Catholic Bishops Conference. "It has caused disappointment in the Pakistani Catholic community."
Church leaders worldwide are divided over how they should respond to The Da Vinci Code. Some demand that censors ban the film, or cut scenes that they say undermine Christian beliefs.
So what youre saying is that its okay for Muslims to bash Christianity,Judaism and others. But God forbid we make any comments about them!!
I'm still waiting for them to protest the Koran's offensive alternative take on the story of Jesus Christ.
WHY? Muslims believe that Christ is not the son of God, was not crucified, and married and had kids. JUST LIKE THIS MOVIE...!
Off with their heads!
So dissing Jesus is a no-no, but killing Chritians is kosher?

In a world of alternate media (including underground bootlegs), censoring the original does little to stop its message from getting out.
Wow. The Islamists are more upset with the plot line than the supposedly Christian west.
Read the threads on the slave trade of Pakistani Christians. This "protest" is laughable. Did CAIR give them some PR tips?
So am I to understand that these Isalmist are actually coming alongside to help defend the Christian faith or is it an extension of Islamic militancy (i.e. you offend us and we cut off your heads)?
Fatwa time!
Any excuse for a riot.
I'd post a reply, but I have to get some paper towels to wipe Diet Coke off my monitor!
In United States politics, a Sister Souljah moment is a politician's public repudiation of an allegedly extremist person, statement, or position perceived to have some association with the politician. Whether sincere or not, such an act of repudiation can appeal to centrist voters at the risk of alienating some of the politician's allies.
Then get out there and witness about what you believe. Protesting this film is not going to convert anyone.
They are trying to show some "consistency" in claiming they oppose defamation of ALL of the prophets, after the fact.
Islam does believe that Christ was a very important prophet, although not the son of God, and not as important as Mohamad.
Except it is a crime for a mulsim to convert away from Islam. In some countries it is punishable by death.
Islam is a death cult that does not tolerate deprogramming.
Muslims are psychotic.
