ABC News Update on Hastert Story (ABC says believe US not the Justice Dept.)
ABC ^ | Brian Ross

Posted on 05/24/2006 8:10:05 PM PDT by hipaatwo

Brian Ross Reports:

Richard Esposito and Rhonda Schwartz contributed to this report.

Despite a flat denial from the Department of Justice, federal law enforcement sources tonight said ABC News accurately reported that Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert is "in the mix" in the FBI investigation of corruption in Congress.

Speaker Hastert said tonight the story was "absolutely untrue" and has demanded ABC News retract its story.

Law enforcement sources told ABC News that convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff has provided information to the FBI about Hastert and a number of other members of Congress that have broadened the scope of the investigation. Sources would not divulge details of the Abramoff’s information.

"You guys wrote the story very carefully but they are not reading it very carefully," a senior official said.

One focus involves a letter Hastert wrote in 2003 urging the Secretary of the Interior to block an Indian casino that would have competed with tribes represented by Abramoff.

"I've noticed something very interesting this evening. I've been perusing some of the "throw the bums (Republicans)" threads this evening and noticing new names...but with old sign up dates and very little posting history"

Hey, it doesn't mean they're not out to get you...

A couple of weeks ago when Goss resigned I suggested that it may be because these leak investigations were going to begin to focus on Congresscritters and other politically active individuals (including the press) and it would be better to not have an individual in charge that could be labeled a "political hack" trying to help the administration get even with its detractors.

And if it IS true I hope he gets his fat ass kicked out of politics. I'm tired of those thieves no matter if there is a D or a R after their names. He's acting a lot like he is guilty of something, we just don't know what it is yet. At the least he is acting RINO.

Yep, and those who are hopeful that this is a leak sting operation are giving our side too much credit.

Only democrats are shrewd enought to do that.

Go easy on him- he's a used car salesman with nothing but lemons in his inventory.

Heh digger, you got some issues. "Then die from a million cuts". What does that mean?

Pelosi, Reid, Kerry, Kennedy, Durbin, Rockefeller, et al are ETHICALLY CHALLENGED MORAL LIGHTWEIGHTS.

I am not going to give the mmy vote. Do not think so.

With rhetoric like that, I think you can convince the bums on the corner for a quarter to vote for them. Not me. I have a family and children and will not place their future in the hands of those lightweights while we fight this war on terror.

I am a former Marine, 85-89 7222 hawk missile operator, and I do not think surrendering to these murderous radicals is the way to fight a war. GOP is for me.

Bingo. Time to put the children to bed because the news is soon going to be an adults only show. Gotta suck to be a reporter that has been publishing leak classified information.

I am glad to see digger took his or her medication and fell asleep. Not very stable and not very polite. Definetely a person with issues that I am surprised has lasted this long on FR without being permanently banned.

The mental patients at Huffington Post are already treating this story as gospel. They have learned nothing from that Rove indictment nonsense.

I would trust a categorical denial from the DOJ versus a story from anonymous sources written by Brian Ross, whom is being investigated by the feds for being the recipient of leaked classified information and publishing it.

Ross is in allot more trouble than Hastert. Oh, what a web we weave.

Yes it does. I just posted a new thread that he DOJ has issuded a second confirmation that Hastert is not under investigation. A direct hard slap back at Brian Ross and ABC. Sweet to see them get pounded.
