The Nation -- The news that Chris Dodd, the stodgy senior Senator from Connecticut, is pondering a run for the presidency proves that ego knows no bounds.
Dodd's been in the Senate forever, has no natural constituency in any important primary state and has recently angered the Democratic base by repeatedly defending Joe Lieberman. Think John Kerry is a liberal elitist? Wait until you meet Dodd. He may be an able, distinguished Senator, but Dodd has absolutely no chance of becoming president.
The fact is, everyone, including ten of Dodd's Senate colleagues, is running for president these days. What better way to get some face time, promote a pet cause or raise big bucks? As Mike Crowley of The New Republic wrote a few weeks back:
It used to be that a politician seeking even semi-serious treatment as a candidate would go numb in the hand on the rubber-chicken circuit, sucking up to local party functionaries in primary states. But, thanks to an explosion of media and the press' absurd obsession with presidential politics, all you have to do is call a press conference, sit back, and field calls from TV bookers--even if the margin of error is the only way you'll even register in the New Hampshire polls. As a result, the early days of presidential campaigns have increasingly become the playthings of second-tier pretenders exploiting easy publicity.
p> A google news search for "Chris Dodd presidency" returned 81 stories. Dodd's pulled this stunt before. After a visit to South Carolina in 2002, the Hartford Courant declared, "Dodd Seen As 'In Play': The Buzz is Rising About Presidential Run." Actually, there was no buzz then, and there isn't now.
It bears repeating that a sitting Senator hasn't been elected to the White House since John F. Kennedy. If your name isn't Barack Obama, don't even try.
The Senate is a body composed of 100 people who all think they should be President, and one person who really can be. He sits in the big chair on special occasions.
I can't believe this piece was in The Nation.
Mr. Dodd is the possessor of an ego the size of Oprah's or Tom Cruise's. God, he is such a putz.
The younger Dodd should take the exit his father did. The body politic would be the better for it.
Take my senator, please!
Dull Dudly Doodly Dodd.
Thomas Dodd was elected in 1958 to Senate. He was re-elected in 1964, but in 1967 he was censured by the Senate for using campaign funds for personal purposes.
Years ago, then Senator Pat Moynihan said it best on ABC's This Week. He said there is a disease which circulates around Capital Hill. The Senators who catch the disease wake up one morning convinced not only that they should be president, but that people will vote for them.
Dodd's father: Biggest crook EVER!
A legion in his own mind.
Don't get too excited here, he is just positioning himself for the VP role when Hillary moves to the Right to secure the election.
Oh, he should be president - doesn't Imus tell him this everytime he appears on his show?
And the slimeball is a friend of Billy the Toon. That seals it right there.
Close to the epitaph on Elivis Presley's grave: " A living legend in his own time."
"Senator, I knew Elvis Presley. Elvis Presley was a friend of mine. And you're no Elvis Presley."
Anyone WHO IS NOT HILLARY, is going to get this treatment in the Lib MEdia...
It's already decided by the K Street/Dem Corruption money crowd. They want the return of Crooked Bill, he made them SO MUCH MONEY before....
