WASHINGTON (AP) House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi has asked embattled Rep. William Jeffereson to quit the Ways and Means Committee.
Yes, it wouldn't be appropriate for someone from Ways and Means to be taking money they hadn't earned from one person and giving favors to... uh, on second thought, never mind.

Why did he have to be asked? When there was a question regarding Tom Delay he stepped down immediately. He didn't HAVE to be asked.

I hope Willie Jeff paid the taxes on thst bribe money. If he didn't he in real trouble.
Not only is he unwilling to step down from his committee, he has already refused to step down from his position and he said yesterday he has full intentions on running for re election.
Of course she wants him gone. This story, from what I hear with NO proof, could get bigger and wider.
didn't I read something about her trying to make amends with the black congressional caucus yesterday????

I have received your letter of this date requesting my immediate resignation from the Ways and Means Committee. With respect, I decline to do so.
Through my committee position and since this federal investigation became public, I have secured over $20 billion in tax credits and federal funds for my district after Hurricane Katrina. I authored the GO ZONE Act, the Katrina Public Finance Act, and the Katrina Tax Relief Act, along with my colleague Jim McCrery, which all resulted in massive tax relief for families, seniors, government agencies and businesses in the hurricane-affected region. All of these matters fall within the jurisdiction of the Ways and Means Committee. Additionally, my committee covers trade, which is important the Port of New Orleans. My work on the committee has been important to our port's recovery after the storm.
None of the matters reported to be under scrutiny involve issues under jurisdiction of the Ways and Means committee. Therefore, such a request would be even more perplexing and unreasonable. If I agreed, it would unfairly punish the people of the 2nd district and I will not stand for that.
Further, such a request would be discriminatory, in as much as no other Member currently under federal investigation has been asked to step down from a substantive, legislative committee assignment. It would also be unprecedented, in as much as I have served with Members who have been indicted, tried and won their cases, and who were never asked to step aside from their committee assignments during those processes. Therefore, I will not give up a committee assignment that is so vital to New Orleans at this crucial time for any uncertain political strategy.

Yeah, but don't forget they're the party of "no controlling legal authority" and proud of it, so none of us should hope for a conviction on fraud, accepting bribes OR on endangering the public welfare (when he tied up two NG trucks and a rescue chopper so he could get some thing (like evidence) out of his NON FLOODED house.
The only reason I can think of is that Hastert and the RepubicRATs want to become the minority party again as badly as the DemonRATs want to become the majority party again.

You're assumimng the drive-by-media will call her on this. That would be a wrong assumption.
She also looks weak and the dems look totally corrupt. Delay quit without being asked. Pelosi don't seem to have any control over her troops if one who is being investigated can thumb his nose at her.

What will the Demagogues do when Rep. Jefferson holds tight and refuses to move? I'll bet he's thumbing his nose at them behind the scenes and Pelosi is at a boil because her "culture of corruption" campaign is blowing up in her face.
