(Preston-WTNH, May 23, 2006 Updated 11:45 PM) _ There is a whole lot of celebrating going on and some disappointment in Preston after voters approved the Utopia Studios plan.
Out of 3,500 voters, some 2,500 cast their ballot. Voters in the tiny town of Preston have passed the $1.6 billion Utopia plan.
Utopia - the plan known as Hollywood East - is a go and supporters couldn't be happier.
Throughout the day, there was a steady turnout of voters casting their ballots on this hot button issue.
The developer vows to work closely with the community and protect the rural character of the area.
"This is a community project. We have incorporated community input every step of the way from day one. And you know, everything remains exactly as we originally planned it out and thought about it but we have only incorporated community input in that," says Joe Gentile, developer.
People are expecting thousands of new jobs and a huge boost to the tax base. There are still many phases to this project. The developer says he is committed to being a good neighbor and working closely with the people of Preston. He hopes to begin work on the site at the old Norwich Hospital in January. He would like to be open for business in July 2009.
