Humans have always been self-centered. Now it has merely become more visible, probably due to the decay of manners.

Hillary later told New Zealand Press Association he would have abandoned his own pioneering climb in 1953 to save another life.

Spoken like a true gentleman, one who knows the value and importance of a human life.

Humanity has always been that way, my brother.
We're flawed.

She seems more like the ones who let a guy die rather then interrupt their own glory.

Yeah, I know.

Except she was born/named YEARS before Sir Edmund had done anything noteworthy.

There is a lot of armchair quarterbacking going on. I think it depends on how far gone he was. I would have to defer to others more expert on this but some have said there was nothing they could do to save him at that altitude. It may be one of those situations where the appearance of what they did looks bad but the reality is they couldn't have done anything else to save him.

The man who died was a apparently a hotshot who didn't think he needed to carry oxygen to climb to the top. He was wrong.

That being said...even though the guy was stupid and wrong, should the others after paying $35,000 have passed up the opportunity to go to the top in order to save his life?

Yes, I think so.

It's already been done. Many times.
The life was more important.

If you've read the stories, Everest is a regular tourist trap during the season (about now.) Lines of fools, well to do fools to be sure, it takes about 60 Gs to get there and back, with no guarantees you'll return in one piece, or in one breathing piece. The rich useda go to Monte Carlo and gamble away their fortunes. Now they go to the Everest and gamble away their lives. Who cares if you climbed some hillock, who cares if you finished a marathon? Help a blind man across the street for once, you fools!

I agree, and am shocked that anyone would even question that.

If we all had to die for doing something stupid...we'd all be dead.

If, say, my father was climbing Everest and abandoned it to bring a human being down and save a human life, I'd be far prouder of him than if he'd just climbed a mountain.

Humanity world-wide has become incredibly self-centered.

Oh, I don't know. It is a pernicious weed with very deep and ancient roots. To wit...

==================================

A Jewish man was traveling from Jerusalem to Jericho. The road is lonely, desolate and rocky - bandit country. The man was attacked, beaten up and stripped of his clothes. The bandits took his money and left him half dead beside the road.

By chance a Priest came along and saw the man lying there. He crossed over to the other side of the road, and quickly walked on by.

A bit later, a temple assistant also came along the road. He looked at the bruised and bleeding man, but he didn't stop to help either.

A Priest and a temple assistant - freshly come from worshipping God - and neither of them had stopped to help their fellow Jew? Well, there were bandits around - it would be dangerous to stop and help. They really didn't want to get involved....

Then you don't leave him to die alone - you delay your own climb and make his last hours/days/whatever as comfortable as possible, and then continue your endeavor.
