It's absolutely UNBELIEVABLE. This Republican leadership has to be the most pathetic, spineless, nincompoops I've ever seen. It makes me literally want to scream. Everyday I want to scream.

Congress is a cesspool.

Speaker Hassert did not endear himself with either his fellow Republicans or his adversaries. I guess "stupid is as stupid does" applies to our Congress as well as the developmentally disabled.

Both Hastert and Frist appear incredibly stupid and corrupt with their stances.

I agree 100%, see the rest of my post and my other posts on this thread about party politics in the House.

But, that just isn't the way it works is it?

Heck, even the GOP barely chimed in on that... probably because they 'reserve the right' to do the same.

It is clearly the intent of the Constitution that Members be sheltered from the actions of the Executive, and for good reason.

That sheltering is not absolute but only from arrest. Cong. Jefferson was not arrested--rather, his office was searched pursuant to a lawful warrant issued by the Judiciary Branch.

Sad to say, but the GOP has distanced itself so far from their electorate that they haven't a clue that their base feels abandoned and forgotten. No wonder this "outrage" of theirs over a corrupt representative's office getting raided (after loads of evidence points to massive illegality) is ringing hollow!!!

Duh! Last time I checked, the mere appearance of defending personal congressional illegal behavior didn't poll well with the public, but then again offending their constituents seems to be the GOP's overt goal these days.

Isn't this sickening? That OUR side of the aisle is defending this guy against the FBI?

The elite class is what brought down China a gazillion years ago and it will bring down this country too.

"Does congress have a procedure it would recommend or legislation it would suggest (or any laws on the books) about how to proceed if a legislative official is using or hiding evidence of corruption in their office?"

They hold committee meetings to share information on how all of them can practice such bitchin' and righteous procedures.

Congress exempts itself from many of the laws

Not since Newt's "Contract w/ America." Its a "no no" now.

I am literally sick about this. Republicans are doing everything in their power to disgust people. On both sides of the aisle and in between.

Hastert isn't concerned about Jefferson's arrest for bribery.

He is concerned about the protection of papers of Members of the House from the Executive.

The Privileges of the House, established centuries ago in England in fights- real fights- with the King, are at stake.

Though it seems to me that the efforts "SE Mom" related from Byron York are impressive and possibly sufficient, Hastert has cause for complaint. It is his job to protect the House from the Judiciary and Executive.
