Do you know the UTM coordinates of Ahmjinedad's residence?
No matter; plenty of our missiles already have it memorized...
And, if your "Tel Aviv" crater came to pass, the vast majority of Americans would consider anything longer than the flight time of an ICBM to be dragging our feet.

No, the original point was how much the USA would defend Israel in the event of an attack. I think not so much. I hope I'm wrong.

I think those advocating a pre-emptive attack on Iran are moving in the right direction, but don't go far enough with their piece-meal approach. I say go pre-emptive all the way: simultaneous nuclear first strikes on Iran, North Korea, China, Russia, and Venezuela. Nothing else has the capability of unifying all of us behind the President like a just war. No one will dare criticize President Bush once we're fully involved in war with every single nation on the planet that poses a threat to our security. It'll make us forget all this divisive immigration debate too, and help our party hang on to Congress this November. A "win-win" scenario, in other words.

Don't you think the President's statement is to cause Russia and China to pressure Iran?
To: Constantine XIII
True, but they can't stop eveything getting in either. Just look at the weapons and other materials getting into Gaza these days.
I think the Arabs will try and nuke Jerusalem.
To: Mamzelle
Do you really think so? My own take is that interest and support for Israel has declined enormously. Democrats used to support Israel--all that's left is Leiberman. US Jews don't really support Israel--76% voted against Bush, and Kerry is not pro-Israel.I agree. A little dose of clarity for the Freeper kick arse contingent is a good thing! Thanks!

"I agree with you, but does anyone have a good feel of how the Russians or Chinese would really react if action was taken against Iran? In other words, they may have there calculation of "backing" Iran calibrated to a certain tolerance. For example, they might say, we'll go to the mat for you in the diplomatic arena, but once the shooting starts, they are outta there. I don't have a sense of just how strong the Russian or Chinese commitments really are."
I agree. My sense is that they are talking tough, trying to be an irritant to the USA, but do not want to expend TOO much capital in defending Iran, much less get involved in a nuclear showdown.
To: Taylor42
Nah, they want it for their own. It's special because Mohammed parked his horse there or something. :)
They'd much rather have Tel Aviv blown up.
IMHO.
To: LadyNavyVet
No they wouldn't commandeer it. Maybe a very religious terror cell will commandeer it (with a nuke Iran gets to them).
Who's to say the world knows about it? Try again.

For the last 40+ years it has been an open secret that(in a crisis) the Israeli Air Force is for all practical purposes an extension of the US Air Force.
The understanding is roughly this. Rather than build and maintain another 10 Nimitz class carrier battle groups at an enormous expense, we give billions of dollars a year to Israel. They buy modern aircraft from us, they fly them maintain them and base them in Israel. We sell them AWACS and other modern systems which are fully compatible with our air defense systems. Israel gets to use these systems to defend itself. In return if push comes to shove those airplanes will fly missions in support of US forces.
I guarantee you that US AWACS planes already have all the Israeli frequencies preprogrammed and could just as easily vector an Israeli plane to its target as an American plane.
For all the talk, everyone in the region well understands that it is immaterial if the WMD attack is on Tel Aviv or Tallahassee the response will be precisely the same.

Hmmm. Interesting observation. You won't find anyone who would agree more that the current "leadership" (quotes fully intended as sarcasm) is weak. But there is a deeply ingrained attitude that, when the existence of the state is put directly on the line, the Israelis are prepared to open up ye olde can of whoopass with a capital A. Unfortunately, they seem prepared to allow the existence of the state to be threatened in little increments, like the frog in the pot metaphor. Ironically, that may be worse, because they may have lost it before they really know it, Heaven Forbid.

I'm a grouchy guy! ;-) No offense.
The records are fine, but they will just tell the story after it happened. And I was just pointing out how Tel Aviv could be nuked without a missle. There are other ways too, I'm sure.

I agree, Steve. The Russians and Chinese are onboard with Iran only as long as it serves their interests, because the Russians and Chinese are onboard with ANY country only as long as it serves their interests.
If the mullahs go off half-cocked and nuke Israel, the Russians and Chinese will drop them like a hot potato.
To: Steve_Seattle
That's my gut, just from looking at what it is really worth to the Rooskies or Chicoms. In other words, to them, its just business and the cost/benefit calculation don't offer enough to make it worth blood, treasure or a few population centers.
To: no dems
I don't mean to diss your religious beliefs but this should be approached pragmatically and not based upon anything written in a holy book.
