Groups launching citizenship, voter drive Local organizations will join in a national effort this summer to produce a million new voters and citizens and urge them to get involved in government.
At a news conference at City Hall this morning, Christine Neumann-Ortiz, director of Voces De La Frontera, an immigrant worker rights organization, said her organization along with other Wisconsin groups will participate in the "We are America" campaign, a national effort to register poor and working class people as voters and to encourage those eligible for citizenship to become naturalized.
The new effort grew out of the recent marches nationwide that sent thousands into the streets to push for comprehensive changes in immigration laws, she said.
"We need people to get involved and to take back the government," she said.
In addition to Voces, Wisconsin Citizen Action and the Milwaukee Innercity Congregations Allied for Hope (MICAH) will be involved in the voter drive and citizenship effort that's being called "Democracy Summer."
Nationally, the coalition includes the Center for Community Change, the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles and the Service Employees International Union.
Also at the news conference, Neumann-Ortiz, along with representatives from Planned Parenthood and the Latino Health Organization, called on Gov. Jim Doyle to veto legislation that would impose new citizenship verification requirements for health and public assistance programs in Wisconsin, including Medical Assistance, Badger Care, Senior Care and food stamps.
Although this bill is aimed at illegal immigrants, many low income and disabled people would be affected by the requirement to produce a birth certificate or passport in order to receive benefits, said Carolina Gonzalez Schlenker, a physician and president of the Latino Health Organization.
Whenever someone not entitled to vote does so, someone who IS entitled to vote is disenfranchized. I don't hear Jesse or Al complaining about it tho.

They did the same in '04. That's where a good chunk of Soros' and Hollywierd's money went. Signing 'em up and getting the vote are two different things. That said, this sort of stuff scares me. They will stop at nothing...
Thats one of the reasons that having to produce evidence of birth and status are the way to go. Then they coulcn't register the ILLEGALS.
Agreed. My hope of hopes in this regard would be a federal law requiring photo i.d. for all federal elections. Perchance to dream...
