I believe that the bio said 35 missions in 18 months, not 50, not 200. My dad flew 50-70 total missions in both Europe and the Pacific and survived. His opinion of Bentson was that he was a worthless, corrupt democrat.

Being a war veteran does not confer eternal respect nor does it shield anyone from disrespect or criticism. Hagel actually did serve honorably in VN, but he is not deserving of any respect for what he is as a senator. Benedict Arnold was a true hero in a major revolutionary war battle but was a true traitor in the end.

The most interesting thing about the Quayle comment was that it was a lie. Bentsen was not close to JFK in any way. He was just a fellow senator and nothing more. It was a truly shameless cheap shot.

Oh yes, he was a war hero just like John Kerry.

Don't forget George McGovern.

" ... "if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all. ..."

I've tried and I've tried. How about this?

The highway to/from Mexico in TX is named for him.

I know he was a commie, but I really liked Eugene McCarthy's comment about why he should be the democrat nominee in 1960.

That would be 1968. Twelve years later McCarthy wound up endorsing Reagan.

Too bad he'll only be remembered for that one lame quote.

I have it from a good source his name is on a few forms of US currency. You wouldn't happen to want to rid yourself of those bills with that awful name on them, would you?

A lot of folks don't remember that Eugene McCarthy supported Ronald Reagan in 1980.

The sun always shined on Lloyd Bentsen. That is what he was fond of saying.

Darned fine soldier. Went Democrat when they actually stood for something and got left behind waiting for them to come home to roost.

A slaute, a farewell. Thanks for serving OUR country.
Rest in eternal peace.

Thanks for that-- Politics aside, Bentsen was one of the last of the good ones, and his duty to country in the time of need will always be admired.

Wasn't he over the Treasury Dept. when his BATF attacked the Church at Waco? (can you guess my feeling on this subject?)

First Senator I ever met; came to our high school in the 70s; the old goat could not keep his hands off of my girlfriend! Rest, you represented Texas well.

in 1988 famously told rival Dan Quayle he was "no Jack Kennedy,"

Never could/can understand why Republicans have to praise JFK, Roosevelt and Truman when runninig for naitonal office. I remember the exchange between Bentsen and Quayle and thinking, "Thank God he's no JFK. We don't need another stupid POS like that."

I agree. I'll be the first to trash the opinion of any living individual I disagree with, so long as that individual has the capacity to defend themself.

But to trash Bentsen now that he's passed on is classless, tacky, infantile behavior best suited to the "Dark Side".

The Left had their constitutional right to trash Reagan's policies as long as he was living and in good mental health. But the attacks rose in sheer viciousness once he had advanced Alzheimer's and the attacks continued shortly after his passing. Charlton Heston is now stricken as well; we will likely see the same puerile, tantrumy name-calling exhibited by democRATS & the Left when Mr. Heston passes on.

Thus, it's demonstrable to attack an opponent's position w/o resorting to name-calling. I concur that some people (eg. Kerry) are so astonishingly foolish that they deserve the actual title. But c'mon people, show Mr. Bentsen some respect; you wouldn't want people to speak the same about you when your time comes.

:)
