May 23, 2006 -- IN my new book ("Can She Be Stopped?"), I suggest that the Republican best suited to the challenge of preventing Hillary Clinton's ascension to the Oval Of fice in 2008 is Rudy Giuliani. A Fox News Opinion Dynamics poll released yesterday offers some strong ballast for the idea: In a head-to-head matchup, Rudy beats Hillary 49 percent to 40 percent, the best showing among all Republican contenders.
By contrast, John McCain has a 46-to-42 advantage over Hillary - besting her but not as decisively as Rudy does. Rudy is viewed favorably by 64 percent of those asked, McCain by 49 percent (Hillary: 50 percent).
And this is not a poll of Republicans alone: The respondents are 41 percent Democrat, 32 percent Republican and 21 percent independent.
It's probably not surprising that Rudy wins in a head-to-head contest for the presidency. After all, Hillary is a lightning rod - while he, once a hugely controversial figure, has become beloved.
But what about in a Republican primary? Can Rudy possibly win?
In surveys of Republican primary voters, two names top every list - Giuliani and McCain. Each gets support from around 30 percent, with every other possible contender hovering around 2 or 3 percent at most.

Charisma is the life blood of politics without it no politician will get to the White House. I am familiar with Huckaby and know he will get a lot of opposition because of his martial problems from "true" conservatives. And he has less recognition than Allen.
These are reaches. It will be very difficult for a more conservative candidate to get the nomination.
Yeah, like the farmers are SOO immune to celebrity. Rudy will have them eating out of his hand after a few stories.
Farmers appreciate a good performer as much as anyone. And they appreciate even more a man who can get things done.

Now you have to pinpoint just exactly who is pushing Rudy's candidacy.......and that would be the Everything-For-Us-Nothing-For-You lobby.
Nothing for conservatives, nothing for the unborn, nothing for pro-life judges, nothing for pro-marriage traditionalists, nothing for small government, nothing for those aching to restore a damaged American culture.
Rudy's adopted Republicanism was expedient and calculatedly designed for his political ambitions....not b/c of any sort of Repub principles. Candidate Rudy also placed his name on the Liberal line and proceeded to give Liberals top jobs in his administration---- one of Rudy's Liberal appointees, Russel Harding -- son of Liberal bigwag Ray Harding---stole hundreds of thousands of dollars from the city, and enjoyed gay porn and trips with gay buddies on the taxpyaers dime. Russel's brother also got a big NYC job. For all intents and purposes Rudy-R and Hillary-D are scrounging for the same votes.
Rudy is politically ambitious to the point of obsession---he will do and say whatever is necessary to further his political ambitions. As, for example, when Repub Rudy endorsed Democrat Mario Cuomo for governor (over Repub Pataki who won) b/c Rudy calculated it was in his own best interests to have a Dem in Albany when he decided to run for Governor (this was pre-911). Even now, around NY politics---you hear talk about "Giuliani Democrats." If Giuliani thought it was in his best interests, he would run as a Democrat without blinking an eyelash.
(Q.) Who does not trust people with principle?
(A.) A politican who has none.
It's laughable to see suggested here that we conservatives are sacrifice all our principles and embrace Mayor Rudolfo, just b/c Rudy is a suck-up, and fellated his campaign contributors by telling off a Saudi Prince. To get the presidential nod, Rudy will stick his head up the backsides of so many hyphenates, it'll take emergency surgery to get it out.

I understand about primaries. My point about name recognition referred to the fact that you referred to MIKE Pence as TIM Pence.

You're confusing number of mentions in the media with name recognition. Certainly, mentions in the media help one obtain name recognition, but often, once you got it, you got it.
Richard Nixon doesn't get mentioned in the media much anymore, either, but I daresay that large numbers of folks still remember who he was.
Mr. Giuliani's face was the face of New York, even the face of America Defiant in the aftermath of September 11. I'd be very surprised if his name recognition were to have fallen off appreciably since then.

I think that Mr. Giuliani's record contrasted to Mrs. Clinton's is likely favorable in the minds of many people. It certainly is in my mind. I'd heartily endorse Mr. Giuliani over Mrs. Clinton for US Senate or governor of New York.
But there are plenty of folks, including me, who will understand that we social conservatives have already lost the 2008 election if Mr. Giuliani is the presidential nominee of the Republican Party, and he won't get the votes of folks who understand that.
However, by your assessment of Mrs. Clinton (if only most Americans would share it), we should be able to put up just about anyone against her and win.

There is no Rockefeller wing of the GOP. The man has been dead over two decades.
Cynicism will not prevent Rudy from wowing the Iowans or anyone else.
He will do well enough in Iowa to survive to win the major states. IF he runs and that is a big IF. Right now there is only McCain who can challenge him.
A message foul and false. But the challenge remains to find someone capable of beating Guiliani. So far there is only McCain.
