The United States needs to overcome its fear of nuclear power and embrace the technology as a way to wean itself from fossil fuels, Sen. John McCain told an audience in Manchester yesterday.
Nuclear power "is safe. The technology is here," McCain said, speaking to a crowd of about 200 at a breakfast hosted by The New Hampshire Federation of Republican Women. "It's a NIMBY (not in my backyard) problem, and a waste-disposal problem. It is not a technological problem."
McCain pointed to France, which draws more than three-quarters of its power from nuclear plants, and Russia, which has plans to build 40 new plants, as examples. "We've got to get over it, get over Three Mile Island," he said, referring to the 1979 accident at a Pennsylvania nuclear power plant.
McCain, a potential presidential candidate in 2008, touched upon a range of subjects during a nearly hour-long address and question-and-answer session, including his displeasure with Google's decision to submit to censorship in China.

I believes France has an accord with Russia to process the waste...Russia buries it in the Siberian wasteland.
"McCain pointed to France....and Russia...including his displeasure with Google's decision to submit to censorship in China."
What about their decision to censor here? He loves censorship. He loves France and Russia too. One spineless nation, one that is confused and psychotic, and a long time enemy. They just forgot about mentioning Vietnam, Johnny Manchu's other favorite nation.
Anybody who thinks this human lizard should be president has some wires loose.
Is John McCain the real life Charles Logan?!?!?!?!
Who is this McCain guy, was he in Vietnam with Kerry or something?
I'm pretty sure they reprocess it, which our environuts do not want. Don't ask me why !
Unless clean nukes are adopted. And what about the rising nations of India and China (both of which already have developed the "Big Potato" so there is no reason to fret about tech transfer to weapons grade materials)? Engineers are already confident of "breeder reactors" for energy and are closing in on fusion technology--where there will be minute/zero amounts of nuke waste.
"You can't fight in here, this is the War Room!" The B-52, aka Buff (Big effing' F---er), is one the all time best fighter planes ever.
Republicans like myself don't vote for him. I have voted Libertarian in protest the last two elections. He gets scads of Democrats and misguided Indy's. The Dems run token opposition and don't fund the poor clown. McCain is one of them and they know it.
With our share of the illegal pie, Arizona should soon have about 15 million new Democrat voters bringing us into line with the great socialist paradises in California, Illinois, and Massachusetts. Then they can build a statue of McCain as big as the one of Lenin in Seattle. I hope he has a drink in his hand.
It wouldn't take much for me to NOT prefer him, which is why 2008 is looking like the worst election choice ever, for me.
yeah but you still have Joe Arpaio, lucky you.
By the way, greetings and salutations. (love the pic with the Smith & Wesson submachine gun)
Indeed it is. ....but I can't see myself voting for a treasonous bastard.
But McCain seems to have become unhinged in the last few years. McCain-Feingold is a complete disaster, as is his attempt to shut down talk he doesn't like on the internet.
Which brings me back to my original point: It's pretty depressing that this is still the leader in the presidential sweepstakes, for me, at least. It won't take much to take that lead away, though, and it IS still just 2006.
BTW, it's looking like the Dems are thinking 2008 is going to be a cakewalk, that the public will just want any dem. Hillary, Gore, Kerry, Edwards, Dodd--am I missing anyone on that side?
If it were between McCain and Hillary, you wouldn't vote for McCain?
I've gotta say that last night's 24 was so over the top ridiculous...
The Hillary-Gore-Kerry debates would be pure comedy. ....I hope it happens. Evan Bayh's name has been tossed around, but I doubt the crazy Rat base would nominate someone so relatively reasonable/sane.
What concerns me is that so many GOPers are now convinced that only an anti-gun/pro-choice/pro-big gov't "centrist" Pubbie has a chance to beat Hillary (or any other Democrat) in today's political arena.
Yeah, that is one of my favorite pics!
Yeah, the libs debates are going to be Must-See TV. I don't know where some people get the impression that Hillary is this great debater. Her only political opposition yet has been a third-stringer who lost mostly because he "got threatening" by walking over to HRC's podium. Yeah, that's the woman I want leading the War on Terror.
