I'm in his corner, but he'd better change his position on some things. I just won't support amnesty. And if that brings him down, tha's his fault, not mine.
Nice try.
Your recitation of the "let's split them up" contingent gets about a 3 out of 10. It used to at least sound sincere. Now it just sounds bored.
Neither does the President, at least in the way YOU must think of amnesty. He's looking for a just and compassionate way of maintaining a necessary (yes, necessary) work force.
I've seen a lot of folks on this board disparaging the idea of "work that Americans won't do", but there truly IS such a thing. Think of the more menial service jobs in this country. Do you think that black people, who may have not many more skills than Mexicans or Central Americans will do those jobs? If they desired them, the jobs would be filled, and there would be no need for Hispanic housekeepers, nannies, landscape workers, etc.
On the MS Gulf Coast, and in New Orleans, there are thousands of Hispanic workers rebuilding homes and businesses. Now those jobs have been available since right after Katrina. Were there Americans clamoring to live in rather meager conditions in order to have steady work at pretty good wages? Obviously not, because it was extremely difficult to hire anyone to do that work right after the storm. Now there are lots of Mexicans doing it. If they are willing to live in those conditions, work hard, and by the accounts I've heard from family and friends, do a top rate job, then why shouldn't they be considered 'Guest Workers' and be able to gain citizenship here? There are Americans who haven't worked THAT hard to make their place in this country.
