The idea that the visa will be available only OUTSIDE the country is brilliant!

Who here trust Mexico to do the right things? NOT ME!

And they have to go back to their home countries to apply. I guess you missed that part.

I must've missed the enforcement provisions, too. Did you see any in there?

In addition, it does not provide a path to citizenship.

The sausage-making process is not yet complete, is it?

That is going to a be a problem with any bill that falls short of amnesty.

Doesn't answer the question, though, does it?

What enforcement provisions are in Pence's bill?

What will his bill do when illegals don't sign on?

And unlike the leading plan in the Senate and the blueprint sketched by Bush, his “Border Integrity and Immigration Reform Act” would require all applicants to leave the country first.

NOW, we can compromise.

Gee, maybe those American workers would have more money to spend, thereby increasing consumption? And businesses that play by the rules would not have to deal with those who do not? And government spending on bennies for illegals would drop as well, which would lower the deficit?

If all you write were true, why would the government, from George W. Bush on down, want to grant amnesty to these illegals?

Then again, maybe the outlook wouldn't be so rosy if we were to deport these illegals.

What enforcement provisions are in Pence's bill?

What will his bill do when illegals don't sign on?

It's called HR 4437 - a bill the House has already passed - you know, border security first. From Pence's website:

I see the solution as a four-step process. Securing our border is the first step. The second step is to make the decision, once and for all, to deny amnesty to people whose first act in the United States was a violation of the law. The third step is to put in place a guest worker program, without amnesty, that will efficiently provide American employers with willing guest workers who come to America legally. The final step is tough employer sanctions that ensure a full partnership between American business and the American government in the enforcement of our laws on immigration and guest workers.

On border security, the House of Representatives got off to a great start in December 2005 when we passed H.R. 4437, the Border Protection, Antiterrorism, and Illegal Immigration Control Act of 2005. The Judiciary Committee and the Homeland Security Committee were able to put together a strong bill that will secure our borders.

The House-passed bill was a first step. In fact, my bill begins by including the House bill, with a couple of minor changes. The House got it right, and aside from removing the felony provision for illegal presence and clarifying that no one is trying to put Good Samaritans behind bars, I am keeping this language as-is. We must take a tough approach on securing this nation’s borders. I have said it once today and will say it again, “A nation without borders is not a nation.” What enforcement provisions are in Pence's bill? What will his bill do when illegals don't sign on?

Partly pandering, and partly lacking the poltical will to confront the situation.

LOL!

Do you honestly believe that Bush will sign this into law?

Fair enough.

I see it as mostly pandering and not seeing the need to expend the political capital.

"His plan includes all the security measures of the bill that has already passed the House, and adds a provision for guest worker visas would be good for two years.

What is this, but amnesty for those already here? "

Wrong again. They would first have to leave the country. They would self deport because the jobs would dry up.When the enforcement bill passes business cannot hire illegals or they will face stiff fines and or lose their license.

What would be the effect on the economy if all of these illegals disappeared and were replaced by legal American workers being paid industry-standard wages?

I don't believe in "industry-standard wages" any more than I believe in "industry-standard prices". Wage controls and price controls are both communistic. Both run counter to the laws of supply and demand.

As for the "effect on the economy", it becomes a legitimate economy and people will be affected differently by that.

If a strong economy is fueling a demographic change that will make the US something other than the America I know and love, I'll take a moderate economy and preserve my nation's culture.

When the economy slows down, and it always does eventually, think of all those millions of extra guest workers that the politicians will be refusing to send home because to do so would cause them political problems.

Pence is calling his bluff - sign the law Mr. President or your party will be crushed in November and split forever.WE cannot do NOTHING and the Pence plan is the only way to get illegals to LEAVE THE COUNTRY.Enforcement first-then make them leave

The point is, Pence IS coupling his bill to enforcement.

1. Close the border.
(1) Station the Army and Air Force PERMANENTLY on the Mexican border. Station U.S. Navy patrols in and Air Force patrols over the Pacific, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Atlantic.

(2) Build a fence along the entire border.

(3) Place powerful and authoritative security forces at all legal border crossings to prevent admission of illegals into the U.S.

2. Make it a felony to enter or reside in the U.S. illegally.

3. Make it a felony to hire, assist, aid, abet, or provide social services to illegal aliens.

4. Provide a work permit (i.e. a visa) for all illegal aliens, within the U.S., who have jobs for as long as they have jobs and have no criminal records. Make it a felony for an illegal alien to be within the U.S. without a visa.

5. Make it possible for all illegal aliens who have work permits to apply for U.S. citizenship.

6. Do not require illegal aliens to leave the U.S. as long as they have jobs and apply for and receive work permits.

7. Do not require illegal aliens to pay fines.

8. Imprison or export all illegal aliens who have been convicted of felonies (other than being an illegal alien), who are unemployed, or who fail to apply for work permits.

9. Amend the Constitution so that anyone born in the U.S. is automatically a U.S. citizen ONLY if one or both of his parents is a U.S. citizen.

10. ENFORCE THE LAW. Make it a felony and an impeachable or firing offense for an elected official or a government employee to interfere with the enforcement of a U.S., state, county, or city law.

No anchor babies and build a 2000 mile fence and I'm on board too

Me too. I'm not a big fan of "guest workers" because of a number of reasons. But this plan is a heck of a lot better than the Senate's shamnesty and proposed guest worker plan.

No qualifying for Social Security, either. If anything, set up a 401k for them in a private bank. At least they won't get screwed by that system along with the rest of us. In fact, make it into a beta model we should copy.

Mike Pence for President---Lou Dobbs for Secretary of State.

Mike Pence looked and sounded very presidential speaking at the March for Life last January, accompanied by his lovely wife who stood by him at the podium. Distinguished looking, and ardently pro-life, Pence looks like presidential material to me (makes the execrable Guiliani and McCainiac look like chopped meat).

LOL! Self-deport. Do you honestly believe the illegals who sneaked across the border care at all about our immigration laws and whether they can become citizens?

I do not. I believe they came here for the money and could care less about becoming American citizens.

But, assuming that the criminal illegal aliens will suddenly want to become law-abiding citizens, how will this be any different than now?

It seems to me there already laws on the books that penalize businesses who hire illegals with stiff fines.

If George W. Bush isn't enforcing the existing laws, what makes you think any new ones will be?

Would it help if I'd said instead, 'prevailing wages'?

If a strong economy is fueling a demographic change that will make the US something other than the America I know and love, I'll take a moderate economy and preserve my nation's culture.

I have no problems with demographic changes. I only have a problem with being the only country in the world that allows free and unfettered immigration by anyone that can sneak across the border, including Mexico.

When the economy slows down, and it always does eventually, think of all those millions of extra guest workers that the politicians will be refusing to send home because to do so would cause them political problems.

Whether it is 'them' the policitians or 'them' the illegals, I don't give a whit about their political problems.

Point is, there are already laws on the books going un-enforced and we don't need more.
