"I don't like the Senate plan, but I do believe there is a subset of illegal immigrants (having NOTHING to do with "years of illegality") that are truly beneficial, truly want to be a part of our NATION, not just leaches, and we should separate them out and make them the first of the illegals to get visas."

ANY alien here illegally has BY DEFINITION engaged in multiple forms of fraud--so they most definitely HAVE engaged in "years of illegality". Deport them all, and make them go to the tail end of the line. I don't care HOW successful they might have been in their criminality.

I worded that poorly. The senate bill presumes that if you've been here 5 years, you have "assimilated". What I'm saying is that assimilation is not the same as "how many years you have been".

That's what I meant by "having NOTHING to do with "years of illegality". I agree that they've been here illegally.

Mike Pence just went RINO on you guys.

Hardly. I don't see him giving amnesty and a path to citizenship for illegals already here. And for all the folks who say you cannot deport 12 million people, well, Pence is working on figuring out how to get them to self-deport.

For you to say anything but "I want Mexican immigration (illegal or legal) greatly reduced, regardless of whether they want to assimilate or become permanent citizens" is contemptibly dishonest.

Hey, you forgot to call us Stormfronters while you were at it.

Sorry, but the only contemptable dishonesty I have seen on this thread has been from you.

“The solution is to set up a system that will encourage illegal aliens to self-deport and come back legally as guest workers”

They should self-deport or else be forced to deport, and get in line like everyone else who is waiting to live in the United States. To suggest that most of the illegal aliens currently living in the USA would like to self-deport is wishful thinking. Why should they. The US, and by extension the Congress, have neither the will or the means to force them to do so.

The wages for these kinds of jobs that employers are constantly pleading for guest workers to fill are jobs that have seen a decrease in wages over the last several years.

They haven't been so desperate that they raised wages to entice new applicants and keep their old employees.

Guest worker programs are an assault on the blue collar worker.

Hardly. I don't see him giving amnesty and a path to citizenship for illegals already here.

Then you didn't read far enough into the article.

His plan includes all the security measures of the bill that has already passed the House, and adds a provision for guest worker visas would be good for two years.

What is this, but amnesty for those already here?

And when these millions of illegals don't sign onto Pence's program? What then?

Sorry, but the only contemptable dishonesty I have seen on this thread has been from you.

Again, you didn't read far enough into the article.

The wages for these kinds of jobs that employers are constantly pleading for guest workers to fill are jobs that have seen a decrease in wages over the last several years.

Because of the greed of the employers themselves.

Their greed killed the Bracero program because they hired Mexican braceros at sub-standard wages in order to increase profits and in the process displaced American workers. This was strictly against the terms of the program and as a result, the farm workers union got the government to kill the Bracero program.

Because of the greed of the employers themselves.

Of course. And that is the answer to the question:

"Why do we need guest workers?"

Answer: Employee greed.

And I dare anyone to argue otherwise.

And now to the other side of the equation.

What would be the effect on the economy if all of these illegals disappeared and were replaced by legal American workers being paid industry-standard wages?

Mexican immigrants walk through the Arizona desert as they attempt to illegally cross the Mexican-US border in April.

Anybody see a problem with this?

His plan includes all the security measures of the bill that has already passed the House, and adds a provision for guest worker visas would be good for two years.

And they have to go back to their home countries to apply. I guess you missed that part.

In addition, it does not provide a path to citizenship.

And when these millions of illegals don't sign onto Pence's program? What then?

That is going to a be a problem with any bill that falls short of amnesty.

Gee, maybe those American workers would have more money to spend, thereby increasing consumption? And businesses that play by the rules would not have to deal with those who do not? And government spending on bennies for illegals would drop as well, which would lower the deficit?
