Your comments are true but as we see this country being de-constructed through NAFTA, open borders and the coming N. American Union just remember that Mr. Bentsen was one of the biggest cheerleaders for all of this nonsense.

I believe, on these electoral maps, Blue has historically been the incumbent, but that was before "Red State/Blue State" took on any further meaning. We should have been Blue in 2004 as the incumbent.

Your comments are also true, but judging solely by his action, they could also apply to our current President.

yet Jefferson died a few hours before Adams, on the same day, 50 years (to the day!) after the Declaration of Independence was adopted. Weird stuff.

Get some tinfoil, make a hat, and it will all make sense. Obviously part of a conspiracy.

Yeah, as long as you're bringing him up they're both useful idiots for the 'post America' crowd that is hell bent on turning us into a third world banana republic.

"Lloyd Bentsen, a courtly Texan"

"Courtly"??? Perhaps by the standards of the Associated Press. By all other standards, Bentsen was about as courtly as his fellow Democrat John Nance ("The vice presidency isn't worth a pitcher of warm spit") Garner.

Agreed. Calling the line a "cheap shot" means that Quayle had no chance to respond. He had a chance, and he didn't take advantage of it.

I recall in a speech he referred to "the wetbacks", and the press downplayed it, saying the term was a local colloquialism and had no negative connotations to Mexican illegals. RIP 'Llord'...

Quayle can take some comfor knowing that he at least carried his home state, and was on the winning team.

“Senator, I served with Jack Kennedy, I knew Jack Kennedy. Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy.”

I hated him for taking a cheap shot like that. It was stooping to the level of calling someone's Momma a name - childish and insulting. I hope his legacy is forever stained with it.

Having said that, I give my condolences to his family in this time of grief. May God give them comfort.

It's unfortunate that most Americans can only remember the debate line putting down Dan Quayle and not Bentsen's Biggest Blunder. But given our country's general ignorance of basic economics, it's unlikely that many would have noticed when Secretary of the Treasury Lloyd Bentsen replied to a question about the midwest floods by Tim Russert on Meet the Press as follows:
A lot of concrete will be poured. You have to look at all the jobs that will be created to repair the damage.

With this kind of logic, wars, hurricanes and earthquakes should be wished for to supplement floods as engines of economic growth.

Regardless of what Bentsen did, or did not, do in the non-political arena.....he was a Demoncrat. As such, he was with the dark side. His aid and support of Demoncrats damaged American far more than his military service helped America. Had Bentsen been more of a man and patriot, he would have rejected what his party became by the 1980's, and fought the Socialization of America.

His failure to recognize, or care, what the Demoncrat Party was doing to weaken and destroy the United States, made him a political "turd".

However, condolences to his survivors.
