Social Security Numbers for Millions of Veterans Stolen From V.A. Official's Home Monday, May 22, 2006
Student Soc. Security Numbers Mistakenly E-Mailed WASHINGTON Personal data, including Social Security numbers of 26.5 million U.S. veterans, was stolen from a Veterans Affairs employee this month after he took the information home without authorization, the department said Monday.

Veterans Affairs Secretary Jim Nicholson said there was no evidence so far that the burglars who struck the employee's home have used the personal data or even know they have it. The employee, a data analyst whom Nicholson would not identify, has been placed on leave pending a review.
"We have a full-scale investigation," said Nicholson, who said the FBI, local law enforcement and the VA inspector general were investigating. "I want to emphasize, there was no medical records of any veteran and no financial information of any veteran that's been compromised."
"We have decided that we must exercise an abundance of caution and make sure our veterans are aware of this incident," he said in a conference call with reporters.
The theft of veterans' names, Social Security numbers and dates of birth comes as the department has come under criticism for shoddy accounting practices and for falling short on the needs of veterans.
Last year, more than 260,000 veterans could not sign up for services because of cost-cutting. Audits also have shown the agency used misleading accounting methods and lacked documentation to prove its claimed savings.
"This was a very serious breach of security for American veterans and their families," said Bob Wallace, executive director of Veterans for Foreign Wars. "We want the VA to show leadership, management and accountability for this breach."

oh well.....
btt
Can the info of 26 mil be on one disk?
They did not specify whether it was a 1.4 MB floppy or a CD, which in my opinion is probably what was stolen, the CD that is....
Either a ploy by the Digital Angel Corporation to come up with a "CHIP IMPLANT SOLUTION," because we're all "tired" of Identity Theft, or it's Hillary (Hitlery's) theft to add to her FBI Files for the final showdown betwen Hillary's GUN GRABBING UN Partners In Crime......and the America Lovin Patriots who are this Country's Last Stand......Just a Thought
Heres hoping that the theives are to stupid to know what they have
Absolutely...And with the MSM giving the Komrades info as to what they have doesn't help either....
Mighty fishy that this analyst takes home this file or files and he happens to get burglarized. Mighty fishy.....
Twenty-six million records..... doubt it was a floppy. Either files on the computer itself or a CD or flash drive.
This sand crab violated Department policies, let's see if they have the guts to punish the guilty basta*d.
I remeber a picture of Bill Gates standing on a ladder holding a CD and along side the ladder was a stack of 8x10 paper 26ft. high which supposedly could be contained on the CD he was holding. IOW - all the information on that paper stack could be held on that CD ... my computer friend says a standard page holds about 8k of written text ....
It's just amazing that these so called "burglars" knew what to go after, unless they found a a laptop by chance and took the opportunity. Otherwise it sounds like it was somehow "staged." Very fishy.....
Yeah...It's bad enough that AOL had this happen too...this'll be twice for me....
So what did AOL do to you? Do people still use AOL???
They had some information about their clients "compromised" somehow, got a letter in the mail about it. I'm still checking into, but now this...I tell you, it's the sign of the times and I think it's just too suspicious to me. Something purposely happening here to maybe usher in the NWO... New World Order and everything else that erodes our privacy...
