Tom Tancredo warns America itself 'in mortal danger'

Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo.

WASHINGTON – Two years ago, he was as lonely as the Maytag repairman – an obscure congressman trying desperately to raise the visibility of an issue he believed threatened the very security of the U.S.

More recently, he has become a force to be reckoned with, the leader of a powerful House caucus, a Republican who has taken on the president, a man respected for outspoken positions and the political force behind what has become the hottest issue in the nation.

Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., chairman of the House Immigration Reform Caucus and the undisputed heavyweight champion of the border security issue in the nation's capital, now tells the whole story of the threats facing the nation, the solutions within its grasp and his own personal quest to awaken the political establishment to the seething discontentment gripping America as a result of illegal immigration.

In his new book, "In Mortal Danger," published by WND Books, Tancredo warns that the country is on a course to the dustbin of history. Like the great and mighty empires of the past, he writes, superpowers that once stretched from horizon to horizon, America is heading down the road to ruin.

English historian Edward Gibbon, in penning his classic "The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" (ironically published in the year America's Founding Fathers declared independence from Great Britain), theorized that Rome fell because it rotted from within. It succumbed to barbarian invasions because of a loss of civic virtue, its citizens became lazy and soft, hiring barbarian mercenaries to defend the empire because they were unwilling to defend it themselves.

Tancredo says America is following in the tragic footsteps of Rome.

Living up to his reputation for candor, Tancredo explains how the economic success and historical military prowess of the United States has transformed a nation founded on Judeo-Christian principles of right and wrong into an overindulgent, self-deprecating, immoral cesspool of depravity.

His recipe for turning things around?

Without strong, moral leadership, without a renewed sense of purpose, without a rededication to family and community, without shunning the race hustlers and pop-culture sham artists, without protecting borders, language and culture, the nation that once was "the land of the free and home of the brave" and the "one last best hope of mankind" will repeat the catastrophic mistakes of the past, he writes.

Tancredo, born and raised in Colorado, represents Colorado's 6th district in the U.S. House of Representatives. Prior to his election to Congress in 1998, Tancredo worked as a schoolteacher, was elected to the Colorado State House of Representatives in 1976, was appointed by President Reagan as the secretary of education's regional representative in 1981, and served as president of the Independence Institute. He serves on the International Relations Committee, the Resources Committee and the Budget Committee, and is the chairman of the Congressional Immigration Reform Caucus. Tancredo and his wife, Jackie, reside in Littleton, Colo.

Don't know his history that well, but did Ronald Regan ever "work in a wealth producing endeeavor"?

He was an actor and led the Screen Actors Guild. I'd say there is a lot of wealth in Hollywood.

The name is Reagan, BTW. Normally I despise the spelling geeks but misspelling the Gipper's (do you know why he's called that?) name and displaying a total ignorance of the man won't win many friends around here.

He was a shoe salesman, a sports broadcaster and a contract player for a major Hollywood studio. Yeah, I would say he generated profits in his life.

Dane doesn't understand the true value of wealth. Teachers to Dane are the worst thing ever ( some are I agree but Cmon now) while movie actors are actually contributing wealth generation.

Reagan being an exception, I would take the majority of teachers over the majority of actors every day of the week.

There is no greater wealth than that of knowledge.

Maybe someday dane will post something other than teacher bashing, basement theaters and they just come to pick vegetables. Well I maybe I wish too much.

Notice how Mr. doom and gloom tancredo has never worked in a wealth producing endeavor. The vast majority of his career has been on the public payroll.

You keep saying this about Conservative Republican Tom Tancredo. What is your point? His voting record on ALL conservative issues (not just immigration reform/border security) is nearly unparalleled in Congress. So, how could he be voting MORE conservative than he already is if he had done the things that you act like he should have done to make him more worthy? What is your damned point!? Or do you just enjoy trashing a good, solid conservative Republican on a conservative forum? How could Conservative Republican Tom Tancredo have better ratings than these?

100% "Best and Brightest" Rating from American Conservative Union (one of only 38 other Congressmen)
100% Rating from National Right to Life Committee
100% Rating from Conservative Index (Spring '05 - 75% lifetime, tied for second highest rating)
100% Rating from Concerned Women for America
100% Rating from Christian Coalition
100% Rating from Campaign for Working Families
100% Rating from FreedomWorks
98% Rating from National Tax Limitation Committee (average since 1999)
95% "Taxpayer Hero" Rating from Citizens Against Government Waste
95% Rating from Americans for Tax Reform
95% Rating from Christian Action Network
93% Rating from Eagle Forum (tied for second highest rating)
0% Rating from National Education Association
0% Rating from National Organization for Women
0% Rating from Brady Campaign
0% Rating from People for the American Way
0% Rating from Planned Parenthood
0% Rating from Pro-Choice America
There are few, if any, Congressmen with a better conservative voting record than this. Stop trashing him.

"Prior to his election to Congress in 1998, Tancredo worked as a schoolteacher"

I don't know what subject he taught, but I am sure I would have loved him as a history teacher. He would have had a bit more to say than what was written in the text book.

If you can't understand that then the church has failed you spiritualy.

I can understand it, I just think it's Tancredoese for "I am your moral savior. Turn America over to me, and I'll make sure there's not a Mexican left to threaten your livelihood."

Pure libel on the Americans who defend this country. He's not fit to lead a girl scout troop.

I have no use for fringe politicians who have to make a bogus case about how horrible this country is in a quest for fame, fortune and/or power. This isn't Bolivia.

Easy, tom tancredo follows the lunatic rantings of michael weiner(savage) and not the hopefulness of Ronald Reagan.

You have no evidence that Conservative Republican Tom Tancredo who has earned a 100% "Best and Brightest" rating from the American Conservative Union has any association with Michael Savage, one of the top conservative radio talk show hosts (that you also continually trash - anyone notice a pattern here). You're just making crap up and trying to smear one of the most conservative Representatives we have in Congress. What is your point in all of this?

Sometimes I feel the America is in mortal danger from Tancredo. At least the Republican party.

This is a conservative website. Rep. Tom Tancredo is one of the most conservative Republicans in Congress. He is wildly popular amongst the grassroots Republicans. I've attended two Republican functions that were sold out simply because Rep. Tancredo came to our state and appeared at the functions. This is repeated all over the place. Why do you state that one of the most conservative Congressmen is a "mortal danger"? I just posted his voting record. I'll bet you can't find someone with a better conservative voting record and who leads a large caucus that is made up of one third of the Republicans in Congress.

Neither was tom tancredo's basement theater. It was built with foreign born labor(which tom tancredo admitted, but blamed the contractor, since he was to "busy" in Washington). If Mr. tancredo would stay true to his rehtoric he would get a sledgehammer and destroy the work, by his own rhetoric, done by bad labor.

This has been refuted here. Repeatedly. Yet you continue to post the Democrat oppostion's LIES about conservative Republican Tom Tancredo. You are a liar and you know it.

What is your point in all of this?

Dane wants open borders and is against dealing with illegal on that very level, you know, Illegal.

Dane slams tancredo (IMHO) because he fears him being elected and seeing his hopes and dreams of open borders destroyed once and for all.

Dane if I am mistaken as to why you slam Tancredo every chance you get could you be so kind as to explain the reason you do this?

Let's all stay on the George Bush cheerleading squad (even if he is wrong) and rah-rah our country into oblivion. I agree with Tom Tancredo. And by the way, name a politician that is not on the public payroll.

For someone "upbeat and optimistic" President Bush has a negative attitude towards America's ability to control our borders. Where is that "can-do" American spirit that used to permeate our country? If the will power is there, this country can stop practically all the illegal invaders.

Sorry sink. That argument is classic. Anyone who shows moral sense is out to cram it down everyone else's throat. And so we drift further from the "Glue" that made us great and held us all together. Tancredo states clearly that we All need to get back to our traditional family and spiritual values. He makes the point that flooding our culture with Illegals is a sure move away from that. Most of them have no respect for who we are at all. They only want to come here and make a buck. Other than that they despise America. If they respected it then they would apply to come here legally.
