N.Y. Times Publisher Apologizes for Boomers

New York Times publisher Arthur Sulzberger Jr. told a college graduating class that he was ”sorry” for his generation’s failure to achieve the goals it had set back when he was a college student.

"When I graduated in 1974, my fellow students and I ended the Vietnam War and ousted President Nixon,” he told about 900 graduates of the State University of New York at New Paltz on Sunday.

"Okay, that’s not quite true. Maybe there were larger forces at play.

"Either way, we entered the real world committed to making it a better, safer, cleaner, more equal place. We were determined not to repeat the mistakes of our predecessor. We had seen the horror and futility of war and smelled the stench of government corruption. Our children, we vowed, would never know that. "So, well, I am sorry.”

Sulzberger, who became the Times publisher in 1992, urged the graduates to "know the world” and "stand up for America’s democracy.”

"None of you wants to be standing where I am 30 years from now,” he said, "apologizing to the next generation of bright and shiny college graduates."

If he really meant what he said, you have to wonder why when one party is in power he believes this and when another party is in power he doesn't.

That's right, Arthur. You're a miserable failure.

Same old story...they know what they don't like, but offer no solutions. The most dangerous generation of all.

What he is really trying to say is that he's sorry for all the harmful Bravo Sierra he and others did in their drug and marxist induced haze that has hurt the nation and left it in the state that these new graduates now have to grapple with...despite the best efforts of those who were not so inclined or afflicted.

I wish to apologize to the new Greatest Generation fighting terrorism in Iraq and Afghanistan for the remarks of this idiot, who represents the worst of my generation.

I don't understand where he thinks his generation did anything. How did a generation of petulant but lazy complainers do anything?

Nixon ended the war in Vietnam and he was no boomer. W. Mark Felt ended the Nixon administration and at 90+ years old, he ain't no boomer either.

The liberal moral of the story: "Just kill yourselves kids, the world is a pathetic place and not worth living in!"

No, you were and remain committed to re-making the world in your own image. A world that reflects your tremendous, positivly other worldly inner beauty and goodness.

This is an interesting statement, seeing as how the big government socialism he and his newspaper espouses is the ultimate source "government corruption".

It is the irony of all ironies that America's best generation begat its' worst.

Don't we wish. I don't see the SOB apologizing for supporting LBJ and the Great Society - the beginning of the real rise of welfare state - and of all the troubles since. Talk about a corrupting influence. The rise of the welfare state with its cadres of "gimme more - I deserve it because I'm a victim" whiners is the legacy of Sulzberger and his ilk.

It's subconscious. He would probably never do so out and out...but in essence, that is the truth of the matter. Down deep...he knows, and one day has to come to grips with the legacy he has attempted to pass on to his own descendants.

and smelled the stench of government corruption.

Well, if you keep your bribe money in the freezer like William Jefferson (D-LA) it doesn't develop that stink.

What he's saying is something we already knew: The world would have been a better place had he not been born.

He's a failure because Mommy and Daddy didn't leave him a big enough trust fund.

And as for 'standing up for America's democracy',I guess that's the current method that "progressives" use to say "Bush must be sent to The Hague".

By 'boomers' I thought he meant significantlly audible eruptions of flatulence.

After reading snippets of his remarks, perhaps it's his speech that's one big boomer.

I'd love to have been there when he 'vowed' his children would never know war or government corruption. He must have been completely blitzed.

Pinch Sulzberger, that vicious little queer traitor is getting ready to get another well-deserved black eye. Apologize for your own evil existence, Pinchy Boy. Why do you always need to bad mouth others?
