We are charged by the city for each gallon we use in "sewer" fees.

LOL! I never thought about it that way. That's a great retort for the enviro-wackos.

I'll recycle paper w/o too much angst, but I'll be damned if I'm going to keep bins in my already too small kitchen for tin and bottles, and wash the damn things to boot! To my understanding, the only recycling that sometimes makes money is paper, the rest is a money losing proposition.
