Tape Shows Lawmaker (Congressman) Taking Money (D-La)
Houston Chronicle ^ | 05/21/2006 | MATTHEW BARAKAT

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — A congressman under investigation for bribery was caught on videotape accepting $100,000 in $100 bills from an FBI informant whose conversations with the lawmaker also were recorded, according to a court document released Sunday. Agents later found the cash hidden in his freezer.

At one audiotaped meeting, Rep. William Jefferson, D-La., chuckles about writing in code to keep secret what the government contends was his corrupt role in getting his children a cut of a communications company's deal for work in Africa.

As Jefferson and the informant passed notes about what percentage the lawmaker's family might receive, the congressman "began laughing and said, 'All these damn notes we're writing to each other as if we're talking, as if the FBI is watching,'" according to the affidavit.

Jefferson, who represents New Orleans, has not been charged and denies any wrongdoing.

As for the $100,000, the government says Jefferson got the money in a leather briefcase last July 30 at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Arlington. The plan was for the lawmaker to use the cash to bribe a high-ranking Nigerian official _ the name is blacked out in the court document _ to ensure the success of a business deal in that country, the affidavit said.

All but $10,000 was recovered on Aug. 3 when the FBI searched Jefferson's home in Washington. The money was stuffed in his freezer, wrapped in $10,000 packs and concealed in food containers and aluminum foil.

Two of Jefferson's associates have pleaded guilty to bribery-related charges in federal court in Alexandria. One, businessman Vernon Jackson of Louisville, Ky., admitted paying more than $400,000 in bribes to the lawmaker in exchange for his help securing business deals for Jackson's telecommunications company in Nigeria and other African countries.

The new details about the case emerged after....

"Clinton had a lot of faults but taking money and bribes was not one of them."

yeah it was al Gore that took the money from the Chinese for Clintons campaign wasn't it?

How did Ms Clinton make money in her 'commodities investments' again?

Now, now. You know that commodities investment was pure genius. She's the smartest woman in the world. Besides, we all know that Hillary is interested in women, not money.

Alan Mollohan and now William Jefferson are making things difficult for their ironic "culture of corruption" mantra

Gore didn't take money for personal gain. He took Chinese money for a campaign. We're not talking about Hillary. Name a case where Bill Clinton took personal bribes for personal gain. I don't recall one.

"He was interested in women not money."

Clinton is interested in power. That was evident when he sold blood from prisoners that he knew had HIV and hepatitis tainted blood then sold it to the Canadian government, which in turn sold it back to the US killing hundreds if not thousands of people.

Name a case where Bill Clinton took bribes for personal gain to put in his own pocket. He did all kinds of political shenanigans but not what Jefferson did.

if taking illegal money for the most powerful job in the world isn't for personal gain then i don't understand what personal gain is.

He did all kinds of bad things but he didn't take bribes and feather his pockets with money. That's not what Clinton was interested in. That is evident in numerous books written about him. He carries no money and could care less about personal money. He likes power, women and listening to himself talk.

How about that last minute "going out of business" sale on pardons-to-the-highest-bidder? Remember Marc Rich, et. al.?

You're probably talking about political contributions. That's not what I'm talking about.

Name one case where he took bribes for personal gain (taking money for himself).

John Murtha didn't take any money on camera.

Because everything was done either under-the-table or third-party, ie. MacDougall and the WW fiasco. He has been shown to say things like, "My name can't be on this" and such in order that *you* would not recall personal bribes for personal gain.

Then I agree. Clinton cares little about money in his pocket.
He womanizes in my opinion because he likes the power over women. He takes illegal money for power over people.
He doesn't take it for a new house and such.. That doesn't interest him.

Why do you think politicians spend millions of dollars to get elected to a job that pays only a fraction of that in salary ?

In order to discourage crooked politicians the penalty has got to be super-sized.

I suggest they be stripped of citizenship forever and deported.

It must have been some other money he was trying to rescue in the aftermath of Katrina. This article states that this money was recovered August 3, 2005 from his home in Washington. Katrina hit on August 29.

Evening FWF,
I believe congressman jefferson was set up by the FBI, just like marion berry.

How do I know? I learned this intell while aboard "Mothership #19."

The NOLA "ERC" (Emergency Race Card) will be handily played in this prima facie case.

If I am not mistaken, jefferson belongs to the "HABOP"
(Help A Brother Out Program)
