Bush's Base Betrayal
The Washington Post ^ | Sunday, May 21, 2006 | Richard A. Viguerie

Posted on 05/20/2006 5:11:47 PM PDT by gwb43_2004

As a candidate in 2000, George W. Bush was a Rorschach test. Country Club Republicans saw him as another George H.W. Bush; some conservatives, thinking wishfully, saw him as another Ronald Reagan. He called himself a "compassionate conservative," which meant whatever one wanted it to mean. Experts from across the party's spectrum were flown to Austin to brief Bush and reported back: "He's one of us."

Republicans were desperate to retake the White House, conservatives were desperate to get the Clinton liberals out and there was no direct heir to Reagan running for president. So most conservatives supported Bush as the strongest candidate -- some enthusiastically and some, like me, reluctantly. After the disastrous presidency of his father, our support for the son was a triumph of hope over experience.

I agree. He's better than any alternative we've been seriously offered. However, The man is rapidly losing my support

I agree with Mainevoter. He is a better alternative. I'm not and haven't been a Bush basher.

But, he has lost my support. I see no one better. When I see the common Bush bash op-eds I still think they are ridiculous. But, Bush has allowed things in his administration that cause me to no longer support him.

Ouch...that's going to leave a mark. One of the better summaries of the current situation that I've seen.

The immigration speech was his first on a domestic issue since 9/11 and no vetoes in six years ... that says a lot

And if you closed you eyes the speech could have been coming from LBJ or Clinton. There was no conviction, there was no sense of urgency, non. Instead we got something little to try to make everyone happy. what's the old saying try to please everyone and you please no one.

I don't think that you have any idea what a defeat for the Republican will mean for a very long time.
For me, we have finally reached the point where I'm not sure which party is the most dangerous. They both are, but in different areas.

If we stay home when its time to vote and the Democrats take Congress, believe me, it'll probably be 2 decades before we take it back.

And you point?

Title should read "Bush Betrays Base".

I think it was intentionally titled as such to capitalize on the double entendre...base meaning political base and

1. Lacking morals; wicked.

Thesaurus: vulgar, low, foul, sordid, contemptible, depraved, mean, servile, wretched, wicked, worthless, abject; Antonym: noble.

The alternative to Bush was McCain in the 2000 primaries. Al Gore ran against him later that year. Then we had Kerry in 2004. Best of the bunch IMO.

"For better or worse" Newt took a vow. Did it twice."

By that analysis Hilary and Bill must have attained hero status in your eyes.

I've never been married and had my share of romantic female companions. I have never cheated on any of them.

"I was just saying there is a lot worse a person can do that dump a lousy spouse. Even dumping two lousy spouses. The truth is, leaving a loathsome spouse is a good thing and not a bad thing."

Each time Newt dumped his then current wife for a younger, hotter, sexier woman. Chronologically, his problems started around the time Viagra was introduced.

My 'betrayal moment'? When he referred to the Minutemen as 'vigilantes.'

My 'betrayal moment': when he referred to Islam as "a religion of peace." Hell...we'd have lost World War II if we worried about offending the Shinto followers after Pearl Harbor.
