Hadrian was one of the high points of Roman public works projects. Amazing era of construction.

The Trajan/Hadrian era was the absolute peak of the Empire.

"Is the mystery/secret simply whether there were Roman legions involved in the building of the wall, as opposed to, say, locals pressed into service?"

There was a reason for building the wall, the people on the 'other-side' were 'bad guys.' The Legions were there to protect the construction workers, don't you think?

Wow. This is timely for a lesson plan!

Rosemary Sutcliff wrote 2 well researched historical fiction novels of this time period (used in our homeschool) and one, The Eagle of the Ninth, had a soldier's cloak broach along with a broken standard rediscovered several generations later.

small brooch has been uncovered at a Roman fort that may reveal secrets about the men that built Hadrian's Wall.

So, there isn't any actual secret, or mystery?

belonged to soldier Quintus Sollonius

Serious note: Is each leaf a ten-years of service device? Major campaign victory leaf?

Non-serious note: Now that we know to whom it belonged, will they return it to "his family"?
Or does that only apply to ancient bones found in North America?
