Prayers for Barbaro.
I remember when Ruffian got hurt. It was upsetting...
I'm not here to rile anyone up. Just a little perspective. Too early for me to be going to bed on the west coast. I had a lousy day yesterday, so I am going dancing tonight.
"<Riva lived until 1985 when he was felled by a heart problem"
thank you for correcting me. You are right.
There is no way to keep the horse from putting his foot down and putting his weight on that broken ankle.
Barbero was galloping in place nad just hype up to run .He pushed thru the starting gate but appeared sound. After the start of the race he was running fine but really slamming his legs down trying to get in front. Must have taken a bad step and did the first fracture, but still trying to race.
Yea, and they have to worry about foundering too. What a mess.
Doubtful
You seemed like a pretty big fan at the start of the thread when we all had high hopes. Not seeing where in the first fifty or so posts you indicated so much disdain for the sport.
We're all disappointed and some are broken hearted about this turn of events. But there is always risk in sport, and this reminds us of that, it doesn't mean the sport is never worth the risk.
I don't know enough about horses to know what foundering means. Could you please explain it to me. Thanks.
"The close ups of him coming out of the gate at the start of the race seem to show that he was already tender in that leg."
I'm a relative novice at this, but I would agree with that. (No Holiday Inn last night, but I did have $$ on Bluegrass Cat to win and place in the Derby.)
Pray for barbaro, he's not out of the woods.
If there's no blood supply to heal the injury, the injury dies. Pin firing looks awful because it leaves marks. But it did work, and it did save horses. Might still today.
Can you at least take a moment to be thankful that no jockey was permanently injured today?
I had realized that, thank you. I did not say that I was physically sickened or would not be eating dinner tonight. But I do not understand the sentiment that this was "just" a horse. These are intelligent, sensitive creatures, among the most beautiful that God has put on this planet. Even the most common of them has a gleam of nobility to him. We love them. All of them, even the ones we don't own or ride. And they are never "just a horse" to us.
Because of PETA and people like that who try to shut down racing and other high risk sport is the reason they got the press away and won't let them see.
I was at the hunt races and in the saddling paddock a horse reared and went down bleeding from the nose. Aneurism and was put down . But they put up shields to keep the people seeing that
When I said prior to the race "Barbaro was going to fall". I meant Barbaro would fall down during the race and not finish. I have no idea why I said it, but it turned out to be kind of true. He did not fall down, but he was severely injured.
I really hope you are right and that they can save him. I don't know much about horses, but my gut feeling is the vet is concerned. Just the look on his face when the announcer said, "We'll cross our fingers".
The vet responded, "Cross your fingers, and say a prayer". The look on his face made me think he is truly worried for the horse's life.
fabulous! We won a $5 exacta - $429 bucks!
