If you've ever been on a track or around racehorses and racing people, you know that extreme care is taken for everyone's safety, and the safety of the sport improves constantly. The quality of the equipment, of veterinary care, and of the facilities is much better than it was just twenty years ago. But TBs have cannon bones the diameter of my wrist, to support 1000 to 1200 pounds while they go nearly forty miles an hour. The stresses are enormous. There probably isn't any way to avoid this sort of thing short of overhauling our breeding programs. Even then, horses who have heavier legs still sustain major injuries not unlike this just in the course of fooling around in their paddocks.

That may be. I watch horse racing pretty regularly and I just hardly ever see it happen.

When a horse is going full speed, the weight on their legs is a lot more than their weight. Its around 6 thousand pounds at full speed.
What a miserable turn of events. I cheered for this horse from the first time I saw him race. I hope for all the best to all involved.
Whatever the vets at New Bolton find, Micheal Matz will know what to do. He knows more about horses and injuries more than anyone, besides the vets, of course. He will do what is best for the horse.

Beyond that, sore horses (primarily gelded claimers) are raced all the time. It makes me sick.
There appeared to be no problem until the break. There would be no way to foresee that upcoming problem unless the horse was pulled from the race. That is unlikely and it is not the first time a horse broke thru the gate before time.

That's just a bunch of hooooooey. These horses are more vetted, more conditioned, more worried over than any pampered pet. They are constantly concerned with safety, to protect their investment if not for the love of the horse and the sport. No one wants to see this happen, but there is risk in sport. There will always be risk in sport.
Why is it whenever something bad happens, some have to immediately find someone to blame?
It's sad that Barbaro is injured, but it is just a horse.
