Need to check if he injured the blood supply, if so very serious. Say a prayer.

The issue there is that horses do not have a terrific blood supply to the leg on a good day, and blood supply is critical to good healing.

That's funny.

I pick Bernardini because it sounds like a good Italian name.

Good to hear. The New Bolton facility is said to be the best.

The ironic thing is that Saint Bernardine is the patron saint of compulsive gambling!!

I don't care who you are, that there's funny...

It is weird....having both incidences happen moments apart. Hoping Barbaro is OK.

NBC fails to show the reaction of the owner in the stands as his winning horse crosses the finish line, but somehow found time to show the owner of Barbaro and his wife as they watched their horse come up lame.

Seen a lot of prayers here for poor Barbaro. Can't help but wonder whether Sheik Mohamed prayed to Allah for him, too? It'd be the gracious thing. But knowing TROP...

The good thing is he didn't go down. His jockey did a masterful job keeping the horse on his feet.

I do hope so!!

I remember way back when , I believe, Riva Ridge, broke his leg and had to be put down.

You think the horses are so big and powerful, but they have such fragile lags.

Will you ping me when you more about Barbaro?

I will be praying

I feel very sad for his jockey too

He was too heartbroken to speak to the press, and I don't blame him

Sorry to disapoint Catholics but the horse was named after
a Pat Boone song.

BERNARDINE
(Johnny Mercer)
« © '57 WB Music, ASCAP »

Oh Bernadine oh oh oh Bernadine
I can tell by the dimple on your chin
You're in beautiful shape for the shape you're in
And I'm in shape for Bernadine

Oh Bernadine oh oh oh Bernadine
When you wander into my dreams at night
Your remarkable form is a pure delight
I go go go for Bernadine

Bernadine Bernadine
You're a little bit like every girl I've ever seen
Oh your separate parts are not unknown
But the way you assemble them's all your own
All yours and mine dear Bernadine

Oh Bernadine oh oh oh Bernadine
Say you'll wait for me out by the rocket base
And we'll both blast off into outer space
Oh oh oh oh Bernadine

Bernadine Bernadine
Come away with me now in the rocket-propelled machine
We'll come home by the way of a drive-in spa
Just a little this side of Shangri-La
And there I'll stay with Bernadine
There I'll stay with Bernadine

It's so unnecessary.

Peta will come on line calling for an end to horse racing.

The horse was named after the owner's hunting dog.

Vet reporting that he does appear to have a fracture above and below the ankle (fetlock). He'll likely go to some rehab center they mentioned, they're evaluating for damage to the blood supply that would indicate whether it can heal well.

I knew almost immediately the break was above the ankle, the second break probably happened in those strides he took before the jock could stop him. I heard the vet the second time they interviewed him. The horse is going to the New Bolton Center at the University of Pennsylvania, the premier equine veterinary hospital in the country, if not the world. If anyone can save him, they can.

Something I was extremely surprised at is that no vet examined Barbaro after he broke through the gate. (Or if one did, it was extremely cursory.) Usually when that happens, they take the jock off, settle the horse and have a vet check the animal for any cuts or obvious signs of injury.

The major break happened so soon after the break, that I suspect either the horse was having a problem during warmups or the initial fracture occured when he broke out of the gate the first time. Stupid, stupid, stupid. Where was the vet who is always right next to every starting gate just for such problems?

No, Riva didn't break down during a race. He retired sound and went to stud. But this is nothing new in horse racing. The single biggest quarrel I have with the sport is that they DO NOT DO ANYTHING TO TRY TO IMPROVE SAFETY. Excuse me for shouting.
