This is a one-vote issue for many--and I share some of their concerns--but this country has survived many waves of immigrants and will continue to do so if assimilation is part of the solution.
As someone else said, we should be glad this wave consists of hard-working Christians, eager to embrace the American way, instead of the Muslim hordes of Europe.
And before anyone gives me the "my people came here legally" routine, ask yourself: was there any other option at that time?
Again, we are losing sight of the real problem afflicting this country: liberal control of the schools, the media and the courts. They of course are the ones who stand in the schoolhouse door, blocking the assimilation path so well tread by most of our ancestors. And make no mistake about it, they are loving the fact that this issue is on the front burner.
That's exactly right, there are no do-overs on this one. That's why I get so infuriated at the comment, "Well, at least he's doing something!"
For those of us who predicted 20 years ago we would be here again, it's deja vu.
Disagree with you there--we have to start somewhere. Bush is doing that, and I don't care how many people say otherwise.
For those of us who predicted 20 years ago we would be here again, it's deja vu.
And yet Bush is called a traitor around here, and we worship Reagan--who put us in a far worse position than he started with-- without reservation.
It's not an accident that the leftist moonbats support what is, in effect, open borders. Those who wax eloquent about their new "awareness" should ask themselves why...
This writer says, in effect, that the people he's seeing marching are a lot more worthy than the former residents of New Orleans. While that's great for NO, it doesn't do a lot for the rest of us.
Thank you!
Great post, but you will be flamed by the "Boo-Birds".
Well said. If open borders were such a great idea, we'd have no borders. Those who don't understand that are about to have the Law of Unintended Consequences vividly illustrated.
I love reading posts from you and others that share your position. If, in 2006, the debate isn't over expulsion/deportation, but rather, citizenship, what does this portend for the future?
With the support of Dems & some % of the GOP, it's clear as day where we're going. The key is change and there's money to be made in the transition. I've already benefited financially (passive investments) from what occurred in Los Angeles; I aim to take it national.
Thanks for the heads up.
I bit my tongue on the "New Tone," I voiced concern about No Child Left Behind. I got frustrated about the no-veto presidency. I said in 2000 that there was one issue W would lose my support on (for him, not any policy) and that was immigration.
He has. I expressed in 2005 that I hoped he could make the tax cuts permanent and continue the WOT, and not screw up too much else. Wishful thinking, I guess.
OK, you're going to capitalize on the coming end times, we get it, we get it!
Reading posts such as your's has made be increasingly positive that regional investment practices have national applicability.
Citizens that disregard everything that has been learned from Los Angeles should do so at their own peril.
I used to be somewhat dismayed at the lack of political support for a stronger stance, but now I'm all for selling the rope...
His support is at 64%. I hope your senator is as good as he is.

Vitter is a fantastic senator. But, because he said something about Bush you write him off.
Go down this list to see what he stands for. He ain't perfect, but, we'll get him there.

It's not exactly end times - people live very comfortably in Mexico City and S.American cities like Lima & Santiago. Having visited each, it's actually quite pleasant - if you have the cash.
Where you don't want to be is outside the gates. Inside is all luxury, as waiters/support staff attend to your every whim; outside is another story.
You mentioned that you're a writer - I've had a series of technical books published as well. I've been nursing this kernel of an idea for some time, but now it's really starting to firm up.
It's very rare for something to be a 100% slam dunk. Posts such as yours on a site like FR completely reinforce national implications.
Should be----Do you KNOW anything about Vitter.
But at least we get work out of more of them instead of sending a monthly check to subsidize their idleness.

This WAS the benefit. We now have much larger numbers of people who benefit from the discipline of going to work and their children are actually experiencing a different life from the one when not working or criminal behavior were their only life models.
There's no ethical, legal, moral, economic and sane policy to clean up a mess created by the lack of these. There's no good answer. That's why this issue contains so much poison and why we really did need secure borders. Uncontrolled immigration is bad enough in and of itself.
Many decry the tone of the discussion regarding uncontrolled immigration, the spite and meanness. I think they will be surprised as they see how bad it will get...this issue is a spark dropped into ready fuel.
The Rule of Law is a social covenant. Some have unilaterally broken that covenant, and express surprise at the depth of opposition. They are somewhat like Vicky Gene Robinson, the gay bishop who preaches for unity in the face of a schism he created...I ask, are you so arrogant that you don't care to understand what effect this will have?
Work they do. But they also fill our jails, public hospitals, and failing schools.
Areas where Hispanic immigrants cluster are known as democratic districts.
Oh - and least ten percent do their "church going" in a mosque. CAIR, Hamas, Hezbollah, and Al Qaeda love the idea of even more U.S. immigration from places such as Egypt, Pakistan, and Yemen.
Comparisons to earlier immigration waves don't hold up. Waves have a beginning, middle and end.
Thank you for pointing out a very important point that is being overlooked in this issue. Also the current Senate bill is not a "Guest Worker" Program it is a program to allow tens if not 100's of millions of new PERMANENT RESIDENTS leading to CITIZENSHIP, which will be competing with AMERICANS for jobs, social services, schools, medical care, social security and VOTES (and jail space). They will be net users of taxes not payers.
They will not be conservatives and will vote DEMOCRAT.
I'm glad it gave you something to write about. I'm sorry, however, that it didn't give you anything to say.
